So, you were told to avoid Sea World because of this?

I like Sea World, my kids love it. My wife worked at an aquarium in Los Angeles, and the people who work there are very passionate about marine life and care very very much about the welfare the creatures in their care. I can't imagine it being any less true at places like Sea World.

I'm not buying what this Blackfish movie is selling.

I know this is satire, but to address your comments, I’ve seen the documentary, and all the pro SeaWorld pieces against the documentary.

I’ll never set foot in any SeaWorld again.

I saw the film. I was nonplussed. Released orcas seek out humans. People who get in the water with flesh eating submarines are Darwin candidates. Keep the fish as happy and healthy as possible. Stop hating Sea World.

Most everyone missed the true message of “BlackFish” .

Dont go to SeaWorld not because of their treatment of the Killer Whales but because of the treatment of the “trainers” who were lied to and deceived about the true risks in dealing with those animals, and the resultant loss of human lives.

But alas, in this crazy mixed up world , most everyone is emotional about the animals and neglect the foremost issue.

Sea World is not the few idiots who should be in jail for lying about the obvious danger involved when canoodling with KILLER whales, Sea World is much bigger than that and its positives far outweigh its negatives.. IMHO.

There goes that fussy little boy again, lisping about what’s racist. Should’nt he be in charter school this late in October? Anyway, I heard about the concerns raised via Blackfish. My question is; has Sea World made any changes or modifications on how they train their people? I suport people having safe fun with God’s creatures, and learning about them, I just don’t want any lasting harm done when it’s avoidable. I.E., I like animals in circuses, and believe it can remain entertaining, and be done without undue harm to the animals.

Actually, that was my take away, too ... mostly. The other thing was that this was a whale who obviously had a violent history and wasn’t particularly fond of human beings. But he kept on getting gigs and kept on being excused for his actions; kind of like Hurricane Carter.

What deception? You’re working with an animal that has its weight described in tons instead of pounds and actually has the word “killer” as a part of its name! Because of those facts I believe it is incumbent upon you to be honest to yourself and others about what that animal is capable of. If not you are lying to yourself and everybody else. They are fascinating creatures. But be aware they are still wild creatures and they are carnivores. And the last time I checked, humans are made out of meat. The problems start when some of the people who work with these animals start to think of them as human and start projecting feelings and emotions onto them. That is a mistake, sometimes a fatal one.

I had to write an essay on the documentary. It disgusted me that SeaWorld lied to its employees and its customers, and got some of them seriously injured or killed. It also angers me that they would steal calves from their mothers. I understand taking injured whales or orphaned whales into captivity, but needlessly stealing calves from their mothers? That’s horrible. Whales are highly intelligent and social creatures, and it doesn’t sit well with me at all for people to essentially break up families and endanger Pod-life. Then of course, there is the fact that SeaWorld knowingly breeds its aggressive whales, which is highly irresponsible and dangerous to humans. I don’t have a problem with Zoos or places like SeaWorld. I believe that endangered species can benefit from captivity, and that Zoos are highly educational places. I do have a big problem with endangering humans and animals or treating animals cruelly.

Even if no human trainer were ever hurt again, it isn’t right to cage killer whales, dolphins, or any wild animal.

I feel the exact same way about zoos. Life in prison, and for what? So a kid can see an elephant? That’s what the internet is for.

SeaWorld should be shut down.

“...has Sea World made any changes or modifications on how they train their people?”

IIRC, after the Dawn Brancheau incident, OSHA took SeaWold to court and the court declared that trainers aren’t allowed in the water with the animals anymore.

Oh great. All we need is a PETA nut on FR. I took my grandkids to the zoo last Summer and they loved it. The fact that you think zoos are evil makes you look like a maroon.

Rescue and well run zoos I don’t have a problem with, it is circuses that need to be stopped.

"...I feel the exact same way about zoos. Life in prison, and for what? So a kid can see an elephant?..."

I have evolved to the same conclusion.

No one would ever accuse me of being a feelings-based hippy, but it is morally wrong. My child does not need to see an ocelot crammed in a small cage to be a complete person.

I’m similar to others on this forum. While we are conservatives, zoos (marine ones as well) bother us. I cannot think of a worse fate then life in prison, for an animal, and that is what a zoo is. Prison.
