For some reason my parents didn’t care for actor Van Johnson. He was in that great Battle of the Bulge movie. Maybe he was a draft dodger, but I’m not sure.

No, not a draft dodger. He was in a serious auto accident in 1943 which exempted him from service. Might also be possible your folks picked up on his gay vibe (he was a homosexual).

Wish they told you why. My dad got me watching WW2 movies and now if a movie with Van Johnson is on I must see it.

Battlegound... great flick. There were rumors that Johnson was gay.

Van Johnson had just started a 7-year contract with MGM in 1942 when he was in a major road accident which left him with a metal plate in his head. Ineligible to serve during WWII, he became America’s war film hero, playing the amiable guy next door sent overseas to do his part for America. J
