As black-clad police moved in on a group of students Saturday during beer-soaked riots that disrupted Keene, New Hampshire’s annual Pumpkin Festival, the students began to chant, “Bring out the BearCat! Bring out the BearCat!”
The Keene State students, who faced tear gas and pepper spray pellets, were trying to taunt local cops into using their ultimate weapon, a $286,000 armored personnel carrier. Keene got the armored vehicle for free from the federal government in 2012 after citing a potential terrorist threat to the festival.
The city’s claim of a terror threat to the Pumpkin Festival, which draws thousands tourists to this small college town each October, won Keene notoriety and derision from both comedians and lawmakers. Just last month, Keene City Councilman Terry Clark said the armored vehicle had made the town a “national laughingstock.”

Colleges encourage students to get drunk. They share responsibility for this.
“That crowd sure put egg on the faces of the police. Wait, are eggs flammable?”

That crowd of idiots ruined an event that the people of Keene have enjoyed for a long time-——and they will do it again next year.

The farther government gets from the local community, the less it is trusted.
So how many stores were looted and burned? How many cops were shot? None. It was a White riot.
And the terror threat turned out to be community activists inciting to riot. BearCat has no detector for that.
I saw some funny footage, if riots can be funny- the police marched down the street in a classic sidewalk-to-sidewalk line, with pepper balls and clubs. Rioters in front ran away. Then, the students took to the street behind them, filming everything. I could see some of the police reaction- hey, that’s not in the book! They are in front of us AND behind us now!
Good old fashioned American beer soaked fun.
The fact that it was white kids involved is the only reason the enemedia put it on air. For anyone who cares to look (or read the British press) black riots occur monthly, and with much greater violence, but somehow don’t get mentioned by NBC.
Were the FreeKeene guys involved I wonder?
The cops should have brought out the nightsticks, bean bag rounds and rubber bullets.
