My mom was way ahead of the times many years ago with her old side wringer top loading washing machine. She did all the wash in one fill of water because she had to heat the water on a stove before starting the wash. She started with the whites and finished with the overalls. If the great engineers of today wanted to do it right, they would install a system to save the water between washes. There used to be an option where the top loading washer would discharge the water into a side tub and then after spinning the clothes dry, the operator would take the clothes out and put the next batch into the washer. The washer would then suck the water out of the tub back into the washer for the second wash. Front loaders are just a very expensive and worthless idea in my opinion.
Whatever you do buy, make sure it’s heavy and you can’t move it or tip it with one hand. It will dance across the floor it’s whole life no matter how you try to prevent it, or shake itself to death if you do.
We have too but this last washer we bought is a Roper, which is the same as a Whirlpool with a different name and about $100 cheaper. It replaced a 25 year old Whirlpool.
I recommend standard whirlpool top loader washer and front load dryer. (Buy the simplest electronics free units available in the size you need)
Be aware that front load washers, all the style rage SMELL. They have a gasket sealed door and unless you leave them open any water remaining (you can’t see it it will pool by the pump) may start growth. The non sealed top loader allows the moisture to evaporate.
I bought my first whirlpool washer dryer set in 1981they lasted well over 20 years. Then I bought identical style replacement and they have been used almost Daily with little repairs needed.
If you really wAnt to save money from energy, buy the gas dryer as I did (if you have natural or propane gas. )
Six or seven years ago I bought a Maytag washer and drier, the washer being a top loader. Not a single service call or problem since. At the time they were the largest capacity Maytags. Good luck.
It might just be the switch that tells the machine if it’s open or not.
Every day is Throwback Thursday at your place?? Sounds like my mom’s setup from back in the day. The wringer washer didn’t go away until the mid-60s.
We have a winner. Speed Queen is the best by a mile.
For anyone really serious about buying a new washer I suggest reading the Amazon reviews. Look at all the brands. What you will find is that only Speed Queen gets really good reviews.
American made. No bells. No whistles. Very little if any electronics. Old fashioned relay type controls. Close to commercial quality. Lasts forever. Washes cleaner. Lets you fill the tub all the way to the top.
The best washer we've ever had. It replaced a pricey front load supposedly from Maytag but actually built by Samsung. The Speed Queen is possibly the last of the American made washing machines. The new EPA rules may make this the last year they are available.

I have only bought appliances including washer/dryers from the sears outlet stores over the last 20 years... kenmore or whirlpool. They have an online site as well... They offer both new stuff, refurbished and scratch and dent. I’m a fan of the scratch and dent... the online site offers pics too. I have a washing machine that had a small scratch on it’s side lol... which you can’t see because the dryer is right next to it. I bought a new cooktop from the outlet for a third of it’s original price because it was listed as scratched... I have still never found the scratches. You might even be able to contact the stores directly and ask for more pics if the unit you like is too far... they list the shipping price too.

My LG front-loader lasted 3-1/2 years ... and I only had the 3-year warranty. I have a 5-year warranty on my Whirlpool machine, and just last week got the water pump replaced.
“They say” a washer is supposed to last ten years at one load per day, and I average 3-4.
I have older Maytag TOP LOAD washer. It’s been great. My daughter has a high-end front load washer and can’t wait to get rid of it. It’s moldy inside, and it can’t be cleaned, doesn’t clean well, horrible machine. I’d never go with a front load. Also, mine wasn’t expensive.

Agree about your HE points. The old Maytag Neptune apparently had a chronic problem with a seal and bad design. It didn’t clean laundry and left everything smelling like mildew. Other than that, it was a great washing machine.
