Blame Founding Fathers for GOP hold on Senate: Moran
New Jersey.com ^ | 11/07/2014 | Tom Moran

If there is a secular religion in America beyond football on Sundays, it has to be the universal reverence for our Founding Fathers.

So forgive me for what I’m about to say: They also made enormous mistakes that haunt us to this day.

I’m bringing this up because one of those mistakes just delivered the U.S. Senate to the Republicans.

The problem is that all states, big or small, get the same two seats in the Senate. That gives a nearly vacant state like Wyoming the same heft as California or New York. It gives a voter in Cheyenne 66 times more power than a voter in San Francisco in shaping the Senate.

That always struck me as insane. So I was gratified to learn that it’s regarded as insane by one of the nation’s premier experts on the U.S. Constitution, Professor Sanford Levinson of the University of Texas, author of “Our Undemocratic Constitution.”

He dug into this and learned that the Founding Fathers embraced this not because they thought it made sense, but because they were forced into it by small states that were worried about being bullied by big states like Virginia.

"We are stuck with that because James Madison submitted to the extortion of Delaware, and probably New Jersey, for equal representation," Levinson says. "The alternative is they would have probably walked and there would be no Constitution. But it is indefensible in any 21st century notion of democratic governance."

Wait until he learns that the progressives already won that argument with the seventeenth amendment.

Not shocking that leftist idiots don’t understand the concept of a State being a sovereign entity worthy of representation.

Or as an over 70 liberal profressive I know said on reading the Constitution for the first time, “It sounds like a lot of right wing talking points.”

Typical idiot who doesn’t understand the point.

If he had his way, the country would be run by New York, California and a hand full of other populous states.

Texas would be only counter and it wold be insufficient.

Any idiot who believe in pure democracy should be subject to the tyrrany of the mob.

There are those on FR that have no problem ignoring the Constitution if it gets in their way.

Hey Progressives, how about simply disbanding both parts of Congress and allow Barack Hussein Obama to rule by decree? That’s what you really, really want.

Does that also explain GOP control of the house?

My daughter was learning this democracy crap in school and I sat down with her and explained our government ( a Republic) and constitution to her and fortunately she understood.

I guess he doesn’t know the definitions of “federal government” or “states”.

While arguing it’s a bad thing, Moran the moron points out the EXACT reason why the Senate is the way it is. These people are born mindless sheep.

I think he understands the point perfectly.

"Liberals" want to rule, period.

Well, let’s see.. Voters in Cheyenne weren’t permitted to have 66 times more voting power in selecting someone for the senate, as it was to be the state legislatures who elected the senate; well, that is, until liberals demanded direct election of senators.

But hey, seems like a brilliant idea; let’s turn the Senate into a truly representative body of America. Except, let’s not ignore all those people who don’t vote, let’s make sure they are represented too. The senate shall be replaced by a polling conglomerate, the agency of which is selected by the House leadership.

And in reality we would all be controlled by a handful of cities (NYC, Chicago, SF, Philly, Seattle) because, once you leave the city limits, most of this states are pretty conservative.

I think a number of these same States are agreeing to assign their electoral votes to a national popular vote.

Bet he won’t complain about it in 2016 if the Rats get the Senate back. He’ll be like, “Those Founding Fathers were really wise.”
