Best part of ripping your movie and TV collection is eliminating the 10 minutes of forced advertising and shows at the front of the DVD/Blue Ray disc. I stream everything through my PS3, the kids tend to stream it directly through the TV. The PS3 is used to connect to my media server on my computer.
Cable companies have no clue that they are going down. I told my kids that I was pulling the plug on the cable (teens and twenty somethings going to college) and they joked that was cool since they had not watched anything on cable in the last two years.

We got the Roku hooked up, and celebrated tonight by streaming an old movie from Youtube: ‘Quatermass and the Pit’ (q.v.!) It’s a great retro sort-of SciFi movie, first shown as a serial in Britain on the BBC, 1958. (My ‘Dr. Who fan’ husband loved it; and said it was almost Lovecraftian.)
We don’t have the Ooma yet, and haven’t cut service yet; but I’m kind of amazed at all of this. We can get almost everything we need, just with the Mohu “Leaf”!
Back when they ditched analog, and folks without cable had to get the little converter-box, we obtained a couple of them for friends; but we never used them ourselves, because we always had cable.
Now, however, we hook up the Leaf, and we have almost 50 local channels coming through absolutely clear! We could live with that alone: I can live just with radio, local news and weather, and the Saturday public TV cooking shows; and most of my husband’s favorite shows are on network.
The whole thing looks like a Rube Goldberg contraption, with all the wires going here and there (could never have done it without the Husband-Tech) but already we can see that it works for us - and saves us well over $100 per month.
Judging by the posts on this thread, we believe that the Ooma, when it arrives, will be just as satisfactory.
I was worried about Fox; but I realize now that I can see what I need on the Internet; and I get most of my news from FR anyway ;-)

I have Internet via my Phone Company...and would never consider going thru a cable company....my computer doesn’t slow down, as can and does happen with cable, and in fact have better speed then many on cable paying for top speed. There’s no interference from people downloading etc.
I use an old push button phone when the electric goes out...so am never without phone.... used it about five times in the past few years.
I get everything I want on the Internet....and if that goes down I have an old tv hooked up to watch movies, and an extensive collection to choose from.
You can only get FOXNEWSGO if you already have cable provider who has an agreement with Fox News.
I get phone, computer...unlimited long distance( all my family is away) and “special computer service” if having trouble with my computer.....along with other things I never use....all for less $95. monthly.

lol...maybe! I’m always checking to see who’s carrying Fox....just in case I need a back up at a critical time.
I’ve tried using CNN but it’s so disgusting how they deliver the news I can’t handle them.
BUT .. you can sign up for just your local stations .. very inexpensive .. then, you can go to FOX on the WEB without having to sign up for the “Extended programming”.
If I do that, Local stations + internet + phone; my bill would be about $38, versus the $128 I’m now paying. My internet is really good .. and even when I have had issues; the people in customer service seem to be really experienced and knowledgeable enough to help me solve it (and several of their techs are ladies - very smart ladies).
I’m seriously considering this, because some of the programming I like from USA, TLC, HST and TNT are available on the WEB. But, the majority of programming I enjoy is on my local stations.
So, I can still get FOX on my computer - instead of on my TV. There are only a few programs that I watch consistently on FOx; but some of their specials are really good.
This move would give me close to $90 more in my pocket; and a portion of it would be added to my savings .. for a rainy day.

THAT is impressive. Am going to see how it would work here. We have either Cox or Dish as only available carriers in the area. Thanks for the info.

It may be the case. I was thinking of the power to your internet modem at home if you rely only on VOIP for phone service.
