I like it when motorcycles do crazy things. Reminds me of Evel Knievel, one of the greatest Americans who ever lived (he died in 2007!).

I would like to see if a motorcycle could jump the Hudson River in the Tappan Zee area.

Now that would be awesome!

Physics majors:

Do the spinning wheels help stableize the cycle?

Does he shift into neutral so they will spin at the same rate?

Does the motion of the wheels matter at all?

I’ve heard that they’ll accelerate or brake to help with the angle of the bike.

++++
Yes, that makes sense. That is obviously a gyroscopic action.

Looks like he was just starting to rotate backwards as he hit. Must have shifted the weight back just a little.

The rotation of the wheels may work like a gyro to keep him vertical, but most of these jumps go too far forward or back, as they fly, and hit with one wheel first. I think his aerodynamic body, working as a sail in the air probably keeps him more stable than anything else.

I see many jumps fail because they go ass over teakettle due to forward rotation while airborne.

-——Do the spinning wheels help stableize the cycle?

Yes, but that’s the case even when on the ground.

-——Does he shift into neutral so they will spin at the same rate?

No, it needs to be in gear.See next answer.

-——Does the motion of the wheels matter at all?

Yes. The rear wheel is used to control the attitude of the bike. Throttle makes the bike pitch nose up, breaking makes the bike pitch nose down.

Thanks for posting it, pretty cool! I have never heard of the guy, so after your cool link I noticed the Best of Robbie Maddison

I thought some of the other things he had done were perhaps even more impressive if that was possible

Not nearly as many Youtube views on his ski jump video as the video with the most Youtube views ever.
