Posted on 11/14/2014 5:42:16 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

You have some great things producing for you. If I had too many banana and papayas, I would probably dehydrate them for winter treats. Papayas and Pineapples are quite helpful for digestive enzymes which elderly people sometimes need.

I imagine that you could become totally self-sufficient with respect a balanced diet and a little planning, even though you might not be able to grow everything you would like.

It’s so over here too. LOL There’s still some persimmons on the tree, and they say this makes them sweeter, but I am not about to stick my nose out to check it out.

We do usually get some mild days off and on from here on out, so I’ll go outside when we are in the low 50’s and do clean up and mulching - till then it’s going to be sipping tea in front of the heater and reading gardening books, and maybe watch a little tv.

I’m in Missouri, so I don’t know much about your weather, or cactus. I do know that at this time of the year our stores have Christmas Cactus for sale. They will bloom at Christmas.

We have to grow them in pots and bring them in during our harsh winters, but they may be ok on a porch in your location. They are easy to grow, and very pretty when blooming.

Yes, I tried the clove thing, and clove tea, and ambesol, and chloroseptic and Sanson tooth paste, aspiring and Tylenol.

These are a group of teeth that have been capped for 50 years. The gums have shrank, and every now and then there is pain, which the dentist has never been able to say for sure what is causing it.

Nothing worked. So I took a sleep aid and painted my gums with Kanka, and it was better when I got up. Now starting to ache again. May have to go to dentist next week, if I can get in, but he probably won't do anything except take an xray.

Thanks for the picture. Nice looking pumpkins. I didn’t get all my cover crops planted yet. If it warms up a bit, I may plant some more, or just rake up more leaves over the beds for spring compost.

I just remembered that I forgot to dig up the last bit of peanuts, so I may dig those up when the temp is above freezing.

I really like Christmas cactus. Thanks for sharing the picture. We are in near record lows here too. No snow yet.

Yes, the chamber pot. Granny had one for the cold nights. Every morning, she took it and dumped it into the outhouse, and cleaned it up for the next night.

Indoor toilets are better for sure.

I was forced to take cod liver oil when I was a kid too. Have used cloves or clove oil before with some success too. It just didn’t work this time.

Took aspirin, Tylenol sleeping aid and painted the area with Kanka.

At Grandpa’s we had buckets of water from a cistern for bathing. Granny heated water on the stove and added it to a galvanized tub in the kitchen - kids first, then granny, then gramps, and then he carried the wash water out doors to empty it.

The other alternative was a shower. Heated the water and put it into a watering can with a sprinkler head. Take the soap and wet it and your hands, and soap up all over, the granny would rinse off all the soap with the watering can.

I don’t remember you living with us but we bathed in a galvanized washtub with water heated on the coal oil stove. One tub of water for Mom, baby sister then me and last was dad every Saturday night whether we needed it or not...

Please have the dentist consider taking a bitewing (xray). I’m glad that your capped teeth have lasted you so long!
