Why Adele was Right to Ignore Bob Geldof and Band Aid
The Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | November 18, 2014 | Bryony Gordon

Posted on 11/18/2014 2:29:16 PM PST by Cecily

I have so many problems with the latest Band Aid single that I don’t really know where to begin, but begin we must so let’s get going with the fact that two-thirds of the line-up are unrecognisable to anyone over the age of 30 – not least Bono, who in the group photo looks as if he’d rather be anywhere else than at the feet of a YouTube Vlogger (Zoella) and slightly to the left of a bloke who once lost The X Factor (Olly Murs).

Still, that’s not really a bearing on the single as such – it’s more a sign of how out-of-touch I am with popular culture, that when I looked at the picture my thoughts were 'gosh, it looks like a school photo on mufti day!’, followed by 'thank goodness for One Direction – making elderly women feel young since 2010’.

My real problem is Geldof’s insistence on shaming Adele for not appearing on the track. “Adele is doing nothing,” said Geldof at the weekend. “She’s not answering the phone… she’s not writing. She’s not recording. She doesn’t want to be bothered by anyone. She won’t pick up the phone to her manager. She’s bringing up a family, you know.”

This is as condescending as the song itself – do Africans know it’s Christmas? Given that over 500 million people living there are Christians, we must presume the answer to that is yes – and worse, it is a form of bullying that has sneeringly been dressed up as do-gooding.

If I were Johnson & Johnson, I’d sue Geldof into oblvion for trade-name infringement.

...She’s bringing up a family, you know.”

This is the part that ticked me off. Didn’t one of his daughters just die due to an overdose? Maybe he should have spent more time with them when they were younger.

I like Adele. I don’t even know who most of the others are or any of their songs.

“ummm, who is adele?”

Think of her as your generation’s Belle Baker, or Marion Harris, or Esther Walker.

“Do They Know It’s Christmas” is one of my favorite Christmas songs. I look forward to hearing it every year. I even have a VHS that is the recording of that song. It had British 80’s greats like Boy George, Paul Young, Paul Weller ( Style Council), George Michaels Sting, the girls from Bananarama, Tony Handley (Spandau Ballet) and Duran Duran. And the fashion and their great looks. It is one of my favorite times in music.

It was so much more interesting than that stupid and repetious group song “We are the World.”

Geldof is a repulsive puke, er I mean father-of-the-year, whose daughter recently overdosed on heroin

Plus I’ll never forgive him for playing a part in the cause of Michael Hutchence suicide.

Who is Belle Baker, or Marion Harris, or Esther Walke?

Honestly never heard of any of them.

I’d only heard a couple of her tunes on the radio, quite pop, but a cut above. Did not really give her another thought until I was channel surfing one day, and stopped when I saw her belting out those pop tunes with nothing but a single acoustic guitar as accompaniment (occasionally joined by a pisno player).

Not really my style, but I give her tremendous props for stripping down those pop songs like that. She is the real deal (whether she chooses to sing another note or not).

I don't recognize anyone in the photo other than Bono U2 who I don't listen to.

I don't think I'm missing out on anything here.

Were Bobby Vee or Bobby Sherman relevant a decade later? Do they turn up on "classic" or "golden" hits radio playlists and compilation albums? Where is Gerardo or Snow or Right Said Fred today?

These acts are less than one hit wonders.

Dunno but the blonde in the middle is probably “not guilty”

She’s one of the more normal-looking ones. They must be a bunch of racists, though. The white male count is totally off the charts, 20 at least, maybe one more if that dark haired person in the lower left isn’t a lesbian.

If Brack O'Bama had been present, you wouldn't have even seen that blonde.

".... Plus, Mike Peters from the Alarm wasn’t part of it so I didn’t care...."

The Alarm were awesome. Very underrated. I blast their "Declaration" album to this day. My 3 yr old loves it.

I'm raising her on revolution!
