In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

chiaroscuro \kee-ahr-uh-SKYOOR-oh\ noun
1. the distribution of light and shade in a picture.
2. Painting. the use of deep variations in and subtle gradations of light and shade, especially to enhance the delineation of character and for general dramatic effect: Rembrandt is a master of chiaroscuro.

Example sentences:
…film noir genealogies usually reduce Weimar cinema to German expressionism and German expressionism in turn to a catalogue of techniques including: 'foregrounded oblique objected, unbalanced compositions, irregular spatial arrangements, chiaroscuro lighting with a heavy play of shadows…'
-- Mark Bould, Film Noir: From Berlin to Sin City, 2005

Caravaggio, who was 38 when he died on a beach north of Rome in 1610, pioneered chiaroscuro, the painting technique of contrasting light and dark.
--New York Times, June 16, 2010

Etymology:
Chiaroscuro comes from the Italian words for "bright," chiaro, and "dark," oscuro. It entered English in the late 1600s.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I just don’t get that whole thing other than for a smoker attempting to avoid nicotine. and the hookah business equally baffles me. I have literally never sucked anything other than your run of the mill everyday air into my lungs. so I can’t identify with it in the slightest.

They are still getting nicotine, just trying to avoid the tars and carcinogens. Smoker lungs are pretty nasty. I used to have to collect them at the morgue for our research lab. There’s a job I don’t miss.

No, it’s a delivery system for the nicotine. One that gets rid of the problem of secondhand smoke.

There is no reason whatsoever to ban the use of these in public places. They pose no risk to anyone.

No carcasses, unless he gets something this AM. The deer aren’t stupid. They are hunkered down taking shelter from the cold.

If you want some jaw dropping images of this week’s snow in Western NY, go here:

Our deer are very frisky, now that it’s the rut, and they are losing battles with cars on the highways and byways.

It’s sad that people can’t be happy with millions, but need to try to leverage that into more.

My husband is hunting quite a bit south of here, in Missouri. But they hunt only for trophies — 10 points, or more. He and our son are hunting at a private reserve. Their hunting blinds are heated, but it’s dreadfully cold. The 1/2 mile hike to the blind has nearly done him in each day. You’d think they’d have 4 wheelers. I’ll be glad to have him home. I have more than enough problems here that need his attention.
