The hyper-real robots that will replace receptionists, pop stars... and even sex dolls: Unnervingly

Chillingly life-like robots are causing a storm in Japan – where their creators are about to launch them as actresses, full-size mechanical copies for pop idol fans, and clones of the dearly departed.

There is even talk that the naturalistic, even engaging, she-droids may be taken up as men as partners in the not-too-distant future.

Android Asuna was a star attraction at Tokyo Designers’ Week showcase earlier this month and she is one of a series of geminoids, as their inventor dubs them, that are ripe for commercialisation say their creator robotics professor Hiroshi Ishiguro.

...

A fully independent version of the geminoid is expected in 10 years using all the above technologies to make her virtually indistinguishable from humans says Mr. Takeshi Mita, CEO of A-Lab in Tokyo, the company working with Prof. Ishiguro to make Asuna and her kind commercial.

'We already have 20 year's experience making androids in the lab. So in 10 years we will marry AI and life like geminoids in perfection,' he told MailOnline.

Um, guys? What do you think will happen to men when women can buy a walking, talking vibrator that never goes soft, never farts or has morning breath, never forgets to shave, never argues, never wants to change the channel, and never gets tired of giving her his undivided attention and paying rapt attention to her every word?

We'll get bored. See, deep down, we like drama and we like a challenge. And then there's the fact that too many of us have 'issues' where we think we deserve a certain amount of abuse. Meaning that if the robot treats us too nice we'll still find a real man to ignore us during football season.

I cannot watch Barbarella without giggling every time she inquires about “Durand Durand”.

Or the mere mention of Steely Dan.

It’s good. I like a number of Dick’s short stories as well. I’m a big Heinlein fan too.

I thought it was in my laptop camera, which has electrical tape over it?

Wow.

The nose is really wrong...and the rest is not terribly right, either.

I wonder if it was Alice who handed him that little toy snake?

Looks Like Ramses the II if you ask me.

Not any less disgusting than B.S., though.

Merely a diversion. The tape is actually a flex lens camera.

Kidding aside....(or is it?!?!?!) What impresses me to no end is that some people completely spaz out over privacy (I mean nutzoid) and then argue that the tech built into nearly everything today isn’t being used against them. And that of those that do spaz, some think they can turn it off.

Can’t till my future Gynoid starts relaying biometric data! ;)

Yup.

*And* I do clean installs of the OS and never install the camera driver or software.

Mine simply does not work.

But the tape stays on, anyway.

Just in case.

Have you also disabled the microphone/speech function?

Once, many years ago, I was cheerfully surfing along when, all of a sudden, a voice started yapping from my laptop.

I thought it was an ad in an open window from some pop up or something so I closed *everything* and it was still there, only now, it was a garbled conversation.

I killed off the WIFI and the mic functions and removed it from hardware.

It must have been picking up some radio signal, somewhere.

[and yes, I have a witness to all this...it was *not* just the voices in my head...that time]

I’ve been called paranoid for the tape thing...oh well.

Now I have to look into the mic aspect...

It’s gotten past the point of “what’s the point?” when our Smart TVs are listening to and watching us, too.

You can drive yourself mad with worry *or*, just watch TV naked.

Remember the old Yakov Smirnoff joke, "In Soviet Union, television watches you."

Now it's reality here.
