Engine was like a huge chainsaw engine,no torque but tons of horsepower at high revs. Then I bought a Roadrunner and installed a bracket engine in it.Along with a lot of other driveline and chassis mods.It was the only car I ever owned that wanted to kill me if I wasn’t careful.

Greatest car movie ( in the same frame) of all time was “Gumball Ralley”.

“Some things just get meaner with age.”

Back in the day, Burt had the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater in Jupiter, where I grew up. My cousin was in one of the plays there, along with Robert Morse (who was in Mad Men among many other things), and Burt gave my cousin the Trans Am to drive around while she was in town. I was about 5 years old and got to ride in the Trans Am with her and Bobby, and even a 5 year old girl knew this was a cool car!

Those Carter-era Trans-Ams didn't have the power to pull a fat housecat off a dead bird.

The 'powerful' engine option package cut high-15s in the quarter mile, which is another way to say "Would get burned at a stoplight drag race against a late model Toyota Camry that even gave the Pontiac a few cars head start". Those models of 400/403 were also famous for dropping intake valves down into the chamber assuring instant motor death.

In Pontiac's defense, even with those lame performance figures they remained the 'fast car' side of the house in General Motors during the '70s. It wasn't until the Grand National came out in Reagan's second term that Pontiac began to set matters straight.

In an interview some weeks before his death famed director Alfred Hitchcock confessed that watching “Smokey and The Bandit” was one of his guilty pleasures.
