About an hour ago the wife and our dog Lucy were in bed. I was up reading FR when I thought I heard a noise outside. I get up from my chair and open the front door and the porch light is on, it has a motion sensor. I thought that was unusual when Lucy came barreling out from the back door( she has a pet door, comes and goes as she pleases) to the front door to the woods across the street barking like hell. The 4 wheeler was parked in front of the house and that is a hot item for thieves. Lucy finally came back to the house and is now laying out there, ears forward and pulling guard duty. We live in a semi rural area.

I heard the 2010 Census had two additional questions => 1) How many dogs do you have? and 2) What time do they eat?
I’m easy. Golden retriever. 75 pounds of unconditional love. Quiet and friendly. Anyone who comes in the house to do work is greeted with a stare. Until formally introduce by my family, dog will just lay there. No jumping, no licking, no paw offering.
My son trained him well. No barking and when he does there is usually something going on.
My daughter has two dogs. A big Dobie and a Heinz with what looks like a very distant strain of Pit in him. He, however is the biggest chicken there is. But he barks, and alerts the Dobie. Both sleep upstairs with her and the girls when hubby is away on bidness.
They are there to alert and buy time. Time for my daughter to pull out the S&W 686 and/or the S&W 625. She is very, very good with either and unafraid of them.
We live in the woods on the end of 1/2 mile drive. Great collie for watch dog.
Most bad guys will be scared to come all the way down here - no other way out, just our house and son’s house 300’ from us.
Signs all over down the drive: “Small Arms Fire Practice at any time 24x7x365: Trespass at Your Own Risk!” A metal body target riddled with .45 holes center mass and center head, “Security System Always Armed”, in addition to No Trespassing signs.
Arms hidden all over house for immediate emergency access.
VERY risky for any bad guys to try anything here....
Even police comment on the signs if they come down here....wondering what they will find.....
Is there any truth to that, or is it an urban legend? And if there is any truth to it, how can such an action be thwarted?
Hopefully, he got rid of the woman soon after.
My alarm system knows friend from foe(iff capable) and can take a hunk out of an intruders ass. Can First alert do that?
Goldens are one of the pure breeds that make excellent pets/family members. I suppose everyone has their own favorites, but some breeds are across-the-board good choices.
When interviewed, people who are known “home invaders” say the best deterrents to home crimes are:
#1. Adequate lighting and
#2. A dog “inside” the house. And, perps are really hesitant to break into a house where they hear TWO dogs barking. They figure they might be able to handle one, but, not two at the same time.
Our State Farm agent told us they could not possibly care less what animals we have.
That was the first thing I asked before we switched *all* our insurance over to them.

My theory is, that knowing you have Dobermanns, [or other “efficient” dogs] they might consider you a very, *very* low risk for burglaries resulting in claim payouts.
Frankly, we only have home insurance for the machine/bike shop.
Whomever breaks in here, where the dogs are, is not getting out.

I had that taped to my fridge for a while.
Our little Coco came to live with us six years ago. I’m not a big fan of Chiewas but this is the best dog. If anything is going on in the area she knows it and will let me know. Why anyone would throw away this wonderful little girl dog I don’t know. One mans trash is another mans best buddy!

In 1980, I tested/hired/fired enumerators.
We had many that we had to hire, due to “quotas”, who were functionally illiterate.
They’d come to me every day, complaining about the hillbillies, their shotguns and their porch dogs.
What was I supposed to say?
It’s our “culture”.
The 1980 census was a boondoggle, since a vast majority of forms were filled out by the enumerators who feared the hicks, *if* they didn’t just throw them in the trash and quit within a week.
That was back in the days when you actually had to try to act like you wanted to work before you could get welfare.

There's the it's UPS driver again bark (level 1), the hunters are crossing our land again bark (level 2), there's the I'm not sure what's up bark(level 3), and there's really something going on here get your gun and let me loose now bark(level 4).
Operator training is critical.
When hubby is gone, my guns are close at hand at all times.
And why wouldn’t they? Every creature has lived up to its nature, but man.
