Vanity- Need Computer help- no sound on Windows 7

I have no sound on my computer (windows 7) any longer except for the windows dings. When I go to youtube, etc - there is no sound anymore. I have tried to figure out what is going on but no luck. Would really appreciate some help. Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

what brand is you’re computer, it may need a upgrade driver from the computer maker, or, make sure you have windows update turned on.

occamrzr06 is on the right track. If you know how to get to that console, assuming you don’t have 3rd-party software installed for sounds (Creative, etc.), you can check everything there.

Sometimes my ‘device’ deselects and goes to my USB headphones, killing my speakers. Sometimes YouTube mutes for no reason. Sometimes the “level” (found by double-clicking the ‘device’) is set to minimum.

Who knows what the heck causes it, but if you have Windows tones, and your sound card/speakers aren’t dead, you can at least check everything else from that console.

However, if you have 3rd party software installed, you must find that icon in your toolbar and open that application to ensure nothing got hosed there. I’ve had 3rd party drivers get hosed by Windows updates on a number of devices, including sound cards. It could also be a browser add-on problem (usually correctible by a reboot if it’s not corrupt).

But usually most of the problems above kill ALL the sounds.

Also, control panel, system, device manager, go down the page to the sound bullet, click on it and see if there are any yellow question marks, if there are any , that shows devices in your computer not working usually because of software issues (drivers wrong or missing)

Check your volume mixer settings in the system tray, click in “speakers” to access on the right side of the task bar.

Start Button > Control Panel > Sound

This tutorial is helpful as well, but I doubt your problem is as serious if you have the Windows tones.

Rebooted?

Have you tried onlinetonegenerator.com?

Hit “play” adjust volume/freq as desired.

It is common to have up to three audio outputs on a computer. 1: The jacks on the motherboard, 2: Jacks on any installed sound card, 3: “easy access” jacks on the front panel.

For some reason, SOME computers after SOME software installs either lose audio from one set, gaining it on the other set.

Grab that tonegenerator site, hit “play”, and see if you get audio from alternate sets of jacks. Eg; move the speaker plug around.

Also:

Plugged into correct (light green) jack? Plus fully inserted?

make sure the speakers didn’t come unplugged from the back, I think their supposed to be in the green plug-in hole

I ran the trouble shooter and it said all devices are fine. I know its something simple- I hope ;)

If you have some headphones with the right plug to fit the green hole, try those and see if you hear the sound, your speakers may have gone bad

Try accessing Youtube through this URL:

Do you have any music files on the machine? If so, try playing one through Media Player. (or put an adio CD in the drive and play it) If that works, it’s a YouTube issue, if not, then choose the audio speaker in the lower right hand corner of your screen, choose Mixer, and see if you have Device Speakers muted. In theory, everything after the mixer’s the same, so if you’re hearing system sounds, your sound card’s working.
