[R]eports came in of drivers who were illegally street racing in the area and were causing traffic safety issues, along with hazards, which impacted public access to roads.

LA will eventually do Paris one better.

LEO no-go zones on the freeways.

Normally I don't like summary "justice", but I wouldn't have minded one bit if the LAPD had a mobile car crusher for those street racers' cars -- Crunch! "OK, guys, here's your ticket. Now walk home and remember your court date next week."

Have one officer create a disturbance, have another light the car on fire.

Report illegal modifications led to the blaze.

Problem solved.

I am sure there are many ways to enforce the law and take care of this problem without doing it your way.

Of course there are. But that was a response to getting a portable car crusher for half a million taxpayer bucks with the same ultimate result. If we go to street justice, what’s the better option? If we don’t, then use the laws we have.

Pretty stupid to do “illegal street racing” on a Freeway instead of isolated back roads in middle of night. Shoot fifty years ago they had illegal street racers who had portable timing lights and stuff...but since these races draw a crowd if you are racing for “pinks”...but judging the area involved I see low information voter territory and thats all I will say about that...

There are two groups out there who do this sort of thing. First would be the tuner “Fast & Furious” types, mostly younger male, all sorts, white, asian, black, hispanic. A criminal element is present but it doesn’t predominate. Blocking the freeway for racing is viewed by them as more akin to civil disobedience or a prank. Then there are the crotch-rocket bikers who will race not just after blocking traffic but also mixed in with regular traffic, wheelies, super-high speed, very dangerous. Almost entirely black. Hostile. Wouldn’t be surprised for a political element entering into blocking the freeway, since they honestly don’t care about the safety of surrounding traffic.

Years ago in Buffalo, there was a mostly deserted street that was used for racing. Somebody even made shirts - "Ohio Street Drag Racing" or something like that.

The police turned a blind eye. They knew it was safer that way. We even had the "Christmas tree" starter lights for the races. I recall reading that it was closed down after a fatal injury.

?

There are fatal injuries all the time in racing. There was one incident in the many years this was going on. Still much safer than doing it on the open roads.

The activity took place between Crenshaw and Vermont—just west of beautiful downtown Watts.
