First things first: the reviews and social media claims arguing that director Angelina Jolies Unbroken somehow short shrifts the Christian faith or the Christianity of its subject are not just untrue, they are preposterous. This cinematic adaptation of the true story of Olympian and WWII Veteran Louis Zamperini has its flaws, but respect and reverence for the Zamperinis Christian faith is not one of them. Quite the opposite.

Unbroken is the second devoutly Christian WWII film to enjoy a wide studio release in 2014. The first was Fury, an even better movie starring Brad Pitt Jolies husband. Fury and Unbroken are both artistic and commercial achievements thematically and financially rewarded by the exploration of Christian faith.
This is not a hard code to crack.
Jolie and Pitt admit they are not personally religious. They are, however, much more open-minded and tolerant than the bigoted morons behind Noah and Exodus. Between their undeniable talents and respect for others, their careers are now flourishing artistically and commercially in ways that no one would have imagined a decade ago.
For those disappointed Unbroken doesnt cover the second half of Zamperinis life, I have two words for you: Sequel, baby!
P.S. Did I mention that Unbroken is as patriotic as any of John Waynes WWII films?

The next is a bit of a spoiler.
It was a good movie to show the sheer endurance our men had, first, to survive the plane crash, and, second, to endure the harsh treatment at the hands of the Japanese. The negatives of the movie are that it didnt set up the absolutely hopeless and destructive course Zamperini was on in the beginning of his life and that he turned to running to give his energies an outlet. It was covered but not as forcefully as it could have been. Then, the movie lurches to the bombing mission, and the problem the squad had in getting the plane to fly. They were basically ordered to go up in a plane that was patched together with leftovers and that is why it didnt survive the SAR mission it was on.
Next we saw the endurance during the time as a POW. But, Jolie tried to cram too much in too little time and all of a sudden the war is over. They go home and the movie is over. Zamperinis faith is covered as a printed epilogue in the closing moments on the screen.
The story is powerful. Jolie is not.
Despite the tolerance for Christian faith the Jolie-Pitt family have encouraged their young daughter Shiloh to believe she is a boy. I don’t get it.

Now we understand why the liberals have been attacking Jolie and her movie as of late; it has a Christianeque message and they no likey anyone they have to be accountable to.
Precisely.
We saw this yesterday. We were all disappointed in the fact that the movie dwelled mostly on the suffering, first in the water and then in the POW camps. After the first few violent scenes, I really would have liked to see more of his life, any camaraderie with the other POWs, etc. I already knew about the cruel torture of the Japanese in the POW camps. I realize the story was called Unbroken, but to see nothing but beatdowns for nearly 2/3 of the movie really was sensory overload. I look forward to seeing a movie about his life, not just his suffering.
I’ve read Unbroken and have seen many interviews with Zamperini. Inspired by Bill Graham. Forgives his captors. Faith in God and country. Family man. Successful after the war. All of these things are despised by the left.
In their eyes he never should’ve gone to war. If drafted he should’ve burned his card. Then he should’ve grown his hair out, joined the Peace Corp, been a starving artist, protested against Vietnam, and died as an atheist living in France.
Brilliant!
Very good movie
Ive not seen it yet but my friends all rave about it...cant make some happy no matter what.
My daugher saw it yesterday and pretty much had the same disappoinment as you did. It is a movie about this part of his life. Other parts of his life are left out. I guess when Jolie read the book she was more taken with how he survived the sufferings and that’s what she emphasised in the movie. I wonder if she wrote the script too.
The movie did not even come close to doing justice to a great story. A movie couldn’t. This should have been a nine hour miniseries (a la Band of Brothers) with a strong narrator to bring us into the minds of the actors, much like Morgan Freeman did in The Shawshank Redemption. I would have enjoyed that.
Exactly!
Thanks for your review..now I will read the book and likely pass on the movie...seems it could have been titled “Unbalanced”
We are going to get the book, too. A truly inspiring story......especially needed at this time in our country.
In addition, Jolie and Pitt announced they would not marry until homosexuals can marry.
However, they themselves are strong liberals.
Instead of denigrating Jolie & her efforts toward this remarkable movie, why not see it and honor the Christian life of Louis Zamperini.
I’ll wait to see it on DVD or something other than a theatre. I really dislike repugnant Jolie and Pitt and won’t give them a dollar. I can honor Mr. Zamperini in other ways.
How did I denigrate Jolie???? I just don’t like a lot of violence in movies....so I want a review that prevents me from paying to see it. Happy New Year.
