We want to get rid of DirectTV, go with cable for internet, yet at same time, be able to watch FOX, etc., movies. How do we do it?
I still don’t understand why people pay for Netflix, Hulu, etc. everything and more is available streaming for free.
S video cable and audio cables. Or you can buy an av adapter, that’s easiest. I have one. They are bout $50.
I also have an av adapter for my iPad to an hdmi cable to tv.
They both work great. They just mirror whatever is on the computer to the tv.
So far we haven’t had a problem. (cross-fingers)
Dumped DirecTV over three years ago. We use a Roku device to stream Netflix and Hulu for movies and other TV content.
Fox News Channel also makes a lot of content available via their own app and channel on Roku, but it’s not like streaming any of their shows. I see the interviews that OReil,y, Hannity, etc conduct in clip format, but they’re the entire interviews. It took a little getting used to, but was well worth it to save $1,200 a year on DirecTV.
If you want to get rid of DirecTV it depends on how long you have been with them. We had DirecTV for 15 years before dropping it. If you had a contract that is expired it shouldn’t be too hard. Just call them up and tell them you want to cancel the service. Expect to get numerous annoying phone calls trying to get you to come back though. Every time they called me I told them I was sick of every channel having something gay related on it. I told them I wasn’t having that crap coming into my house.
We used to watch Fox news but after 2 years of not having it we don’t miss it at all.
We now use the TV hooked up the a computer to read FreeRepublic for getting news. If I could block all articles that have something related to gay stuff that would be great. Yes, I am a bigot if that’s what you want to call me. I don’t care.
There are easy fixes available on the net to fix the oveheating problem. We had that problem with our Roku 2, none with our Roku 3.
I fixed our Roku 2 by adding a heatsink on top of the processor and cutting away a bit of the case to expose the heatsink and release the heat outside the case. The heatsink was about $2 from my local Radio Shack and a $1 tube of thermal compound to affix the heatsink to the Rokus processor. 15 minutes start to finish to complete the “repair” and it’s worked flawlessly since.
I watch FOX and FOX business, my wife watches the cooking channels. other than that, It’s just the local news.
We live in southern Oregon and can only get a few local
channels through repeaters, which is one of the reasons
I use the net for financial and local news.
Between the two, Direct and cable, it seems weighted towards
cable so I call Monday. Direct is the only way that I can
get high speed.
$200? and a check? What did you do, buy stock?
How long have you had DirecTV? 19 years
When is the last time DirecTV sent you a receiver? 5 tears
Which cable companies are available to you? Charter
Get Netflix/Viki. Why on earth do you want to spend a ton of money on cable/satellite TV with its limited channel package?
It sucks! I see a good Untergang rant here.
These Ruku3 are the size of a thumb drive. Very small, very little room to cut material away and no room for mistakes.
Seems like I should chance it anyways, since I can’t use it the way it is.
Thanks for the idea.
The Roku 3 is the same size as the Romu 2. You’re describing the .roku “stick” device. I’ve no idea how to repair that one.
Go buy a Roku 3. It’s about the size of a hockey puck.
Basic cable service and a Roku.
We got rid of direct, cable, and dish , I put up a high gain tv antenna and watch free tv able to receive 72 channels with antenna on 40 ft tower with rotor. Fox is broadcasted from a town about 20 miles from me in HD. We also subscribed to NETFLEX for ad free movies. Not into sports but many are network channels all in HD and seen many sport shows and games on some of them.
My son and his wife have put together a good streaming package. HULU+, Amazon Prime and Netflix.
If you are in an area with an antennae you might use a combo of streaming services and broadcast, if not just try streaming.
name of mine is Ruku3500 (?)
maybe that’s why it was on sale!
I was a long term DirecTV customer till 2014
Get a fast internet connection. Amazon sometimes has problems at <18mps
Netflix and Amazon Prime has quite a bit to keep you busy.
Roku is probably the best box out there but it doesn’t have DVR support yet.
No good solution to Fox News.
Hopefully they will wakeup soon to the real world.
Honestly, if you go purchase a Roku 3 you should have a much better experience.
While the Roku 3 device doesn't have native DVR support, there are a few good tutorials on YouTube that describe how to DVR with a Roku Device.
Some tutorials are better than others, some involve some pretty technically kludgy solutions but they work ....
