Microsoft's head of Windows Insider program, Gabriel Aul, has confirmed that Windows 10 will require a fresh install on Windows devices older than Windows 7.
Revealed in a reply from his Twitter account, Aul wrote that there won't be any full upgrade paths as these will be solely available for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users.
It makes sense given that some of them might be on older filesystems (e.g. FAT32). That's also assuming that Windows 10 will run on these systems, which although they may have enough resources (RAM/CPU) to power Microsoft's newest OS, may well run into compatibility issues with legacy components/peripherals (rather than software).
That said, you can upgrade Windows XP to Windows 10 (Technical Preview) and still keep some (if not all) of your applications and settings in place. You will need to adhere to three rules (same bit and language versions) and have access to older Windows ISOs.
Microsoft is set to reveal more details about Windows 10 at an event scheduled on January 21 at its campus in Redmond. There's even talk of an updated version of Office for Mobile being announced there.

I’m in no rush to dump Windows 7 either. Mr. GG2 has Windows 8.1 and it stinks.
I’m with you; I’m sticking with 7 until 10 gets its sea legs under it full measure.
I'm speculating that a full install will be 956 Gb and all the legacy '\System32' and GAC conflict nonsense will still be present.
Bloatvalanche. Zero reason to upgrade from Win7 unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I have 8.1 on two machines. It works fine.
Win7 is a WINNER. I use it in home, office, and laboratory environments. It's excellent.
Win8 make me want to grab the nearest firearm and ventilate something ...
Technical Preview looks like it will be good.
I doubt there are any new motherboards that have an 8 gig limit, even on a laptop. I just check a Gigabyte $50 motherboard and it will go to 64G. A similar ASrock is limited to 16G
The rest of y’all can be the guinea pigs; I’ll just stand here and watch for awhile.
To each their own I guess. I find 8.1 a pain to work with. Hopefully 10 will be better.

Boot into and use Desktop
Bring back the Start Menu

Short memory syndrome or ignorance on your part.
Mavericks and Yosemite have been free upgrades, but Mountain Lion (OS 10.8) was a $19.99 upgrade. There have been multiple OSX upgrades that cost money - i.e. not ‘free.’
Mavericks and Yosemite do not support USB monitors well, and it’s an OS problem.
Mavericks now does not play well with owner upgraded SSD’s.
I have a Mac (OS 10.8) and run Windows 7 in Parallels. I do use a USB monitor often and cannot upgrade without significant loss of features, even though it is ‘free.’
Apple makes sure its ‘free’ upgrades can, possibly, cost you in other areas.
