Hey...pizza delivery job...life...? I’ll just go with my life, thank you very much.
The answer to this problem is not to criticize the corporation for taking logical steps based on incentives society has provided, but rather to change those incentives.
"Perhaps it's time to consider a federal law shielding employers against lawsuits if their delivery drivers are forced to use firearms in self-defense."
It is interesting how willing even supposed conservatives are to throw federalism overboard. No constitutional justification for the feds getting into it.
Amish?
Donquaz.......what kind of frinking name is that???
“I think hes Swedish?”
Norwegian actually! He loved his lutefisk before he was tragically shot
Why? Because of insurance companies and litigation. If they don’t have a policy against it then they are supporting it and responsible for mishaps with guns. It will be that way until someone wins a big suit against a company.
Yep, but will be lost on many. She won’t lose her job for defending her life, she’ll lose her job for exposing the company to a civil suit. America, what a country.
Papa John’s Facebook page has been taken over by supporters of the driver.
A long time I delivered pizza. There were frequent attempts to steal money. Everything from ordering to a fake address and then trying to jump you to out an out attacks when you were at their house.
One guy saw I had a bunch of change and asked what I would do if he hit me over the head and took the money. I looked him straight in the eye and said I’d get my gun and kill you. He couldn’t close his door fast enough.
Time to order pizza. What say you papa?
Higher on the dangerous list than police work, yet the same individuals who don't want the pizza drivers to be armed do want the police to be armed. I'd say I'll stop getting Papa John's pizza, but I never buy it to start with.
That said, it sucks that our litigious society make such policy "standard".
When I want a decent pizza, I get one of those at Walmart that are fresh (by the deli area) and bake it myself. Can add ingredients if I desire and can ensure it is cooked just the way I like it.
I used to deliver pizza. Ever other shop followed Pizza Huts rules: Never be armed, dont resist, give up your money. That was easy for corporate to say, it isnt their money or life. We were different, most drivers were armed, even the store managers kept a handgun under the register. We never redlined like other shops, Ive even crossed under yellow police tape to deliver.
Drivers and shops had been hit for several months. Our drivers and store managers defended themselves. It wasnt long before the bad guys stopped hitting us. Other drivers were not as fortunate.
If a few relatives of criminals who sued someone for defending themselves against criminals were to meet “street justice” (e.g. a 3am visit to their house with a can of gasoline or a nice burlap-bag-over-the-head followed by a Louisville slugger), there might be less frivolous lawsuits and less incentives for corporate behavior to fire people for defending themselves.
The scumbags who sue on behalf of criminals (IMHO, being killed or injured is a just cost of being a thug) are just as bad as the criminals.
Dindu Nuffin.
Maybe they should change their policy to "except in defense of their own life."
It's not like her job was VP of Operations. Pizza Delivery Driver is just a transitory job at best. Staying alive while bringing down the perp is much more important. Instead of firing her, Papa John should hire her to train all their drivers in armed self-defense. The only real losers in the story are Papa John and the perp.
I think corporations with victim disarmament policies should be held to very strict liability for the safety of their workers. Because they remove the ability of their employees (and possibly customers) to protect themselves, their responsibility should be viewed as much greater by the legal system, and they should pay through the nose any time their stupidity comes up against the real world.
Papa Johns ought to be on our black list because the pizza sucks.
No good would have come if she had complied with that demand. Clearly she is alive due to her quick effective action.
Papa John’s - you’re WAY off base on this, shame on you for not standing up for your vulnerable employees.
And, must say it: You go, girl!! What a great example you are!!
