And Protestantism is discredited on these very FR pages by Catholics every day.
There MUST be a point in here; somewhere...
What would Joseph call Mary?
Was she from Portugal?
This really ought to be in Religion rather than being in General/Chat like a “tabloid.”
Understanding situations in which worship has gone wrong (and surely this is an example) “may” be helpful in understanding worship that is right. The way the bible portrays the good, the bad, and the ugly of the conduct of God’s people bears this out. It is also amazing to realize how faithful God stays in the face of such woeful misconduct. If this was about the honor of men, this would never be.
The bible doesn't 'address' a LOT of things; but hasn't stopped the church from filling in the blanks.
See y'all later today....
The forum under which this appears has a lot to do with the context. Why is this not under Religion.
Also it might not be precisely biblical, but there is an adage about throwing stones in glass houses. I wish the evangelical segment of Christendom was scandal free. I’m sure God wishes the same thing.
This was the dear abbey situation. Not the one that leads up this thread.
A virgin... but the only virginity she swore herself to was virginity awaiting marriage, as any honorable maiden in her situation would.
Eunuchs makes sense in the passage as a metaphor for renouncing marriage, which would be possible for either gender. Even enemies of Christianity usually concede this, given a lack of history of doing it any other way.
You could say the same of food? No you can’t. Food is morally inert. WHAT are you trying to justify?
But what movie? There’s no link.
Only if you believe a particular church is inspired to fill in the blanks. Which I don’t.
"Lesbians and murders in convents" is tabloid trash which tends not to teach but to titillate. What or whom does it serve to read this shameful filth? It would be easy to find filth on Protestants --- and NOT because Protestants are particularly filthy (much the contrary, I think) but because it can be found a websites of those who scorn the Lord Jesus. Lots of linkable, clickable crap at atheist websites, but, interestingly, not at Catholic ones.
If I were to dredge about those scandal-mongering sites to expose Calvinist clergy wife-beaters, Evangelical pastor child-stranglers, house-church deacons doing incest with their daughters (there was a notorious one in my hometown) and Baptist preacher whoremongers (and I could name one right here in the city from which I wrote) --- but I would not do so. If I did, I would be afterwards ashamed of rash-judgment and detraction, and would have to examine my conscience to discern and detest my sin against fraternal charity.
Thank you.
“Would we do this to the Jews?”
It’s done to Mormons three times a week. Deal with it.
This is worth a read, the article and especially the comments. In the above link, as in this matter of "19th Century Lesbian Convent Murders," those who participate make the whole place smell like the National Perspirer and do the devil's work by pulling people down into scandals.
No wonder our political FReeper brethren rarely come to the Religion Forum. No wonder we can't even recommend that our own families or fellow parishioners join us here online. It's because the Religion Forum is the nastiest neighborhood in this our Free Republic.
There are even better reasons why "rash judgment," "detraction," "calumny," scandal-mongering," "revilement," and "malicious talk" are listed as sins in the Scriptures.
A little more immersion in the Gospels, and --- in particular --- the Epistle of St. James, should leave one adequately instructed and reproved.
But I will end with St. Paul:
2 Timothy 2:23-26 -
Have nothing to do with stupid and senseless controversies;
you know that they breed quarrels.
And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome
but kindly to everyone,
an apt teacher, patient,
correcting opponents with gentleness.
God may perhaps grant that they will repent
and come to know the truth,
and that they may escape from the snare of the devil,
having been held captive by him to do his will.

The fact that constant, day-in-and-day-out Catholic bashing is allowed is why I no longer financially support FR.
+1
Hmm. You are right. Must have messed up the html. No Greater Love
