Back in the late 70s, US automakers successfully got legislation limiting the number of foreign cars (mostly Japan’s) that could be imported. GM executives promptly jacked up the price in their cars and gave themselves a raise. I swore then I’d never buy another GM product, and I haven’t.

GM still had to compete with Ford and Chrysler so I don’t think it was that big of a jack up.

That's precisely when Japanese automakers started loading up their cars with options; they made so much money on the high-markup extras that, IIRC, their profits actually went up while selling far fewer vehicles.
