Turn Off Your Heat: Living in a cold home will make you a healthier, stronger, better person

My dearest wish is to one day have the pleasure of living in a small cabin in the frigid wilderness. There I will spend my nights covered in heavy wool blankets, eating smoked fish and dried fruit. Over time, my beard will grow to the point where I’ll be indistinguishable from a medium-sized woodland creature. The villagers I’ll come to know during my rare visits to town will call me “the wolfman,” not least because I will communicate solely by howling and scratching out messages with my clawlike fingernails. For now, I live in a big city, where such unconventional grooming habits are frowned upon, but I make a point of using very little heat.

I’ve suffered for living the no-heat lifestyle.

Eska, I envy you your lifestyle, but what I really envy is your ability to tolerate that lifestyle.

Feel free to to us more about the cold; it is fascinating to hear about on a theoretical level.

That’s why beds used to have bed curtains. No central heating.

It’s currently a balmy 35 degrees outside. I have my office window open. The guy in the office next to mine has his radiator cranked all the way up. He’s got enough heat going for the entire wing. I never turn my office heat on.

No property taxes, not any local or state taxes whatsoever, no organized local govt; unorganized borough, nearest law enforcement 200 miles away and road is closed for the winter; 15 foot of snow on the summits. No ordinances or regulations about this or that, everybody thinks they run the show and everybody else tells them to put it where the sun don't shine. Cell phones don't exist, no coverage. No crime except an occasional drunk Indian and the Indians are all ok anyway. Everybody is armed for bear protection in summer and to shoot at wolves seen from time to time in winter; hasn't been a murder in almost 40 years; that guy was drowned in the Yukon by his drunk buddies by accident.

The seasonal change in temps is a minor inconvenience everybody takes in stride; but Thank God for Dir TV & Hughes Net & a big screen. The older I get, Arthritus and all the less I ride snowmachine and I gave up dogteam after 20 years a few years back. I still believe in refrigawear and luv my life along the Yukon.

When I hear them going on about snowstorm on Fox; I scratch my head in wonderment. I have seen minus 80's in my life and 5-6 foot of snow everywhere is SOP. Can't figure those people back East?

He can do what he wants with his life. If that involves freezing to death, well... paraphrasing Darwin - the stupidest of any species won’t survive.
