I have been asked to mentor a high school student who thinks she wants to be a lawyer. During our initial conversation, we were discussing various practice areas. Since she had also expressed an interest in engineering, I mentioned Oil & Gas Law. Her response was that she wanted to "protect the environment" and wouldn't be interested in that.
I sense an educational opportunity here. Can anyone recommend a short article or book written at high school level that will challenge her attitude?
Thanks much!
Turn the tables, MAKE HER prove her point, if she can. Then you will see what she is using for so called facts and can counter them.
You have to know what propaganda she has been given.
I would question her premise, that right off the bat, she considers oil and gas law specialization as something that hurts the environment. It seems to be a liberal talking point that energy industries by definition harm the environment. Energy extraction is being done in environmentally sound ways nowadays. She should be challenged on this point.
I know this is not the point you’re trying to make, but clearly “greenies” or whatever one wishes to call them would need experts in that area too. A prosecutor and a defense attorney are both experts in criminal law.
And if anyone here can recommend a book on this subject that would be readable by a high school student my hat is off to them!
Thanks Exton1, but I want to go at this with a little less confrontation. I’m pretty sure her opinion is based on the usual stuff that drilling and oil production is done by big bad corporatists who are raping the Earth.....
I just want to be able to casually say, “you might be interested in reading this book/article” and give it to her without getting her on the defensive.
Have the student watch a video titled “The Greenhouse Conspiracy”, by ITV - BBC’s competitor.
Also, The Greening Of Planet Earth” video by Western Fuels Assn.
If those don’t work, buy her a box of eye glitter and get her a Planned Parenthood charge card to go with the EBT card she will soon be using. Some can’t, or won’t learn. For them, ObamaNation waits.
Try The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
If she does not understand Economics she will follow in the footsteps of E.I. Lenin
I searched, “the case for oil and gas” and found many links worth reviewing. Here is one of many, from which other sources may be found.

Start with the Environment tab on the Exxon Mobil website.
Tell her that there are environmental law attorneys that practice before the Supreme Court. Maybe two or three. The rest are working at Starbuck’s.
THANK YOU ALL for the good suggestions. Oil and gas isn’t my field, and I didn’t even know where to start. I hadn’t thought of it, but she is probably more likely to watch a video on a subject she might be suspicious of, than read a book or article.
I just tried to ping thackery and there is no one by that name ... anyone ?
oops ... called you thackery ... I’m losing it ... ping
Maybe check here?
Kill all the lawyers.
99.9% of all lawyers are scum, the other .01% are/were on my pad.
Ask her if she just wants to complain from the sidelines or be part of the solution?
mind fart international embarrassment par excellance
Alzheimer’s? ... :-) ...
I sometimes wonder about myself.
And it would also test her ability for advocacy.
Actually with the engineering undergrad, get her information about the fallacies of green energy efficiencies and excessive costs, etc.
