Some 150 years since Abraham Lincoln outlawed slavery in the U.S., a collection of rare Civil War-era photographs have been brought to life through painstaking colorization.
February 1 marks National Freedom Day, honoring the signing by President Lincoln of a resolution which became the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and abolished slavery.

It is strange but Lincoln did not outlaw slavery in the U.S.
He issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the Slaves in the South which were under U.S. Control. For instance Ulysses Grant did not free his until the 13th amendment.
They don’t make enough red ink to do photographic justice to the horrible loss of life in that war.
Seems to be a bit one sided.
He was known to have owned maybe one slave, a man name William Jones, whom Grant gave his freedom in 1859.
Lincoln knew that it would take an amendment to the US Constitution in order to formally end slavery. He also knew that he could order the freeing of slaves in areas affected by the rebellion.
It immediately emancipated somewhere between 20,000 and 50,000 slaves.
Yes, they all appear to be union troops. I’ve noticed that the dailmail.com has lots of features on Civil War topics - perhaps they’ll present some confederate photos.

To be honest the Rebs couldn’t afford to have many pictures taken. Only the Officers had portraits and the common soldier is always a corpse taken by sicko Brady et al.

You've got it exactly backwards. He 'freed' the slaves in those areas which were NOT under US control.
For example:
" Louisiana, (except the Parishes of St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Jefferson, St. John, St. Charles, St. James Ascension, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Orleans, including the City of New Orleans) ...irginia, (except the forty-eight counties designated as West Virginia, and also the counties of Berkley, Accomac, Northampton, Elizabeth City, York, Princess Ann, and Norfolk, including the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth[)], and which excepted parts, are for the present, left precisely as if this proclamation were not issued. "

Agree - much better in both clarity and color!
The emancipation was done to incite a slave revolt, which it didn’t. The only revolt it incited was in New York City, the infamous draft riots. I now return you to your regularly scheduled Civil War photo thread.
Actually he freed the “persons” who were slaves.

I always say that zero looks a lot like Lincoln. They’re both physically ugly. Not that they can help what they look like on the outside. Well, zero has lots of money and the access to plastic surgery, which Lincoln did not have.
Not sure about Lincoln, but zero is ugly inside as well.
I also heard that Lincoln has a squeaky, high pitched voice plus when his temper got the best of him, he punched holes in the doors and walls.
