Many Europeans have no concept of time / distance in the US. When I mentioned that I can leave my home, drive at highway speeds 8 hours due east and have only crossed one state / provincial border, they are absolutely floored.

What really blows their mind is when I tell them that there a places here in Colorado in the National wilderness areas where one can travel to and be at least an hours drive away from another human being.

It explains why the first states are generally so small; European settlers had no idea how “unaggressive” their original land claims were.

...he has launched a one-man campaign to correct tourists from around the world.

I once considered launching a one-man campaign to correct everyone who misused loose/lose. Then I realized it's just easier to change the dictionary.

I should have been specific, “people from small, western European countries” as they are the only people I have heard talk about the size of the US.

If I recall correctly the London Bridge is in Arizona, has been for about 30 years now.

Many years ago, my aunt was working in the State department when a letter was received from a European who was planning a trip to the USA. She was seeking guidance and wanted to know it it would be better to see the Grand Canyon in the morning and the Smithsonian in the afternoon or the other way around. She clearly indicated that she meant on the same day.

LOL!

I'm not sure that's even possible if you were OK with spending ten minutes on each attraction. I started to work out how long it would take and then remembered the time difference and...well, forget it. If you were going Smithsonian--> Grand Canyon and had unlimited money to spend (realistically, no SR-71s) you could possibly manage a short visit to both in one day. Not enough time to actually SEE anything really, but you could say that you'd done it. :-)

“People from Europe especially UK don’t have ANY idea just how big the US is.”

I lived in Europe for a couple of years, during my Army service. My wife, daughter and I drove to nine countries. It was a long two day drive, from our South German town to my wife’s ancestral villages on the south Adriatic coast of Italy.

I grew up in part in the great expanses of the American West.

I have met a number of Europeans, who made it a point to travel all across North America, by car. So I guess I disagree with your claim.

One such was a distant cousin, originally from the Maritimes of Canada, who now resides in Edinburgh, Scotland due to marriage.

He was in my West Coast beach town a few years back, to visit relatives, having driven all the way across America.

Conclusion: I have met a number of travelers from Europe, who decide they best way to visit and see America is by car, and they say they love it all.

Canada plus the US slightly exceed Russia in area as it is now. They would still fall short of the old USSR though.

Says here just shy of 3.7 million square miles, behind Russia, Canada and China. That about right?
