I cannot verify the source, but some anthropologists believe that humans did not domesticate dogs. Dogs decided to make humans part of their pack.

After five Golden Retrievers and three Doberman, I believe it.

I only have one pup right now, old English Bulldog, but she allows us to be part of her pack.

We won’t mention the cats. (Spit)

Since the world was created.

This here is the deal...

After G-d created the earth, he then created all the creatures that live on it, including man.

There was just one problem. It was dark at night. Really dark, because the moon hadn't been created yet.

G-d spoke and told all his creatures to get back because he was about to do something - at which point he spoke and commanded a big chunk of the earth to separate itself from the earth and to go jump into orbit where it could reflect some light on the side of the earth that's away from the sun. (The place where this aforementioned chunk came from we now know as the Pacific Ocean, but I digress.)

Anyway all the creatures, and man, got back as they were told, but the dog... the dog wasn't paying very good attention that day and he was out running around or something on the piece of earth as it obediently began to separate and lift off into space.

Almost too late, as the chunk was beginning to gain altitude, the dog made it to the edge... he looked down... he could see the man looking up at him. The man called out "JUMP!"

The dog jumped.

The man caught him, breaking his fall.

And they've been best friends ever since.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

(No Brian Williams jokes, please. My dog wouldn't be caught with him.)

I have no idea how long ago but cannot imagine. Our abilities and theirs complement one another so thoroughly it has to be ancient.

I read of an interesting study once where they had people wear special glasses that could track the movements of their eyes. They found that when a human encounters another human or animal, one of the things we do is we look fleetingly at a single eye before looking at the face as a whole. That little scan from a single eye to both eyes or the face is so fast that people generally don’t or cant register it. But the glasses picked up the movement. And they found that we did it when we saw animals, too.

So that made them curious. They began to measure the eye movements of non-humans, and they discovered that of all the creatures in the animal kingdom (that they found a way to measure) none of them did this rapid eye scan, except one.

Dogs.

Dogs not only did it too, but they scanned the same eye in that rapid eye scan. (I can’t remember if it is the the left or the right eye, but it is the same one)

I’ve been close to dogs all my life. While I don’t need scientific validation, it’s good to know that there is concrete reason behind the impression. My dogs protect me from my shortcomings, I protect them from theirs. It’s such a symbiotic relationship that it can’t be of recent origin.

I sure do love dogs, a great creature. I have heard a figure of 10,000 years ago is when our species hooked up.

Sounds plausible - dogs were probably thinking "Hey, those guys are real good at coming up with food, let's join up with them!". The Scooby Snack strategy.

I read an article that said your dog waits in the car while you go in the store for ten minutes and return with 5 sacks of food. Dog thinks you are the greatest hunter on earth.

"I can’t help but wonder if dogs are growing more intelligent as a result." Otto and Olga, my two dachshunds completely disprove that theory. 😄
