Ellin Jimmerson, a Baptist pastor in Huntsville, Alabama, said she was surprised when she was asked to perform one of Alabama's first same-sex wedding ceremonies after the state overturned its ban on gay marriage. Although she has been supportive of the LGBTQ community, she's best known for her immigration activism.

"I cannot get my head around what happened yesterday," Jimmerson, 63, told The Huffington Post over the phone on Tuesday. "It wasn't just a local story."

A sweet couple who are friends of mine, left an American Baptist Church (he wanted to leave years earlier but she stayed as 'her friends were there.')

The final straw was had for them after some members ran off their wimpy male pastor and replaced him with a her!

The husband of this couple suspected she was terribly masculine but no matter what, they didn't believe having a female in the pulpit was biblical.

His feelings about the female pastor have been borne out when she recently introduced her "life partner" to the congregation, who is another............woman!

There is nothing "mainstream" about this church from a Christian perspective.

From their website:

At Weatherly, women are included in all areas of leadership, including deacons, teachers, preachers, and committee members. We value the many religious traditions within the larger community of Huntsville, believing that we need not invalidate another's belief to embrace our own. Weatherly also recognizes the liturgical heritage of Christendom. The paraments, clerical robes and stoles, and other liturgical symbols are a constant reminder that we stand in a broad, deep Christian tradition.

What do you suppose that they mean by "valu[ing] the many religious traditions ..."?

I interpret it to mean that although they are Baptists, they don't intend to trash the Anglicans, Congregationalists, Lutherans, Methodists, Nondenominationals, Presbyterians etc. I, personally, don't view gratuitous trashing of other denominations as part of mainstream Christianity. To me, that sort of idiocy is restricted to the lunatic fringe.

“If you call a dog’s tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have?” —Lincoln

Four.

If you call a woman a Baptist Pastor, and she is in a room alone, how many Baptist Pastors are in the room?

None.

If two men hold a ceremony similar to a wedding, are they married?

No.

Even if the woman Baptist Pastor officiates?

Nope.

Ah, but they got a license from the State!

Doesn’t matter.

False labels do not alter true conditions, even with the mandate of the State behind them.

Yes it is. Baptists do not recognize women preachers. However, there are those who call themselves Baptists....

Uh...hem. you must mean Presbyterian Church USA which is certainly NOT to be confused with my church - Presbyterian Church of America (PCA) that split off in 1973 - thank God. The people that formed PCA met at briarwood church in birmingham, alabama which I am quite familiar with.

They’re an abomination that’s affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

SBC needs to do some housecleaning.
