I think it was the greatest rock and roll song ever. I never did completely understand it but got the idea that it was about Buddy Holley and the Jester was Mick Jagger.
Also a lot of Classic America is being destroyed by the revolutionists, but that might just be my own idea.
Very rare for a nine minute song to become popular or for it to even get played.

Yes, there are references to musicians, current events, and a whole lot of Biblical/Christian imagery as well. A lot of people miss that aspect of the song.
The jester was Bob Dylan. He changed from accoustic to electric guitar.
I had college course on American sub pop culture at Brookdale Community College (Brian Williams attended there, so it’s light). I took it in the summer when I was home from exotic Glassboro NJ.
A whole three hour session was used to discuss this song.
It was great, imho.
