Fifty Shades of Grey is easily seducing the North American box office, where it's poised to gross north of $26 million Friday for a historic $75 million to $85 million debut over the long Valentine's Day and Presidents Day weekend.
Universal's film adaptation of EL James' S&M-laced romance novel will easily best the $63.1 million launch of Valentine's Day in 2010 to tie up the best showing of all time for the holiday. The range of $75 million to $85 million indicates that no one is exactly sure how the movie will perform or how front-loaded it is since there are no precise comps.

Soros probably bought millions himself along with the other wealthy leftists.
The reviews have been flaccid.
One review I read yesterday in the paper said Last Tango in Paris was better and it was 43 years ago.
If American Sniper is any indication it will do well. I am glad this movie is doing well because movie companies need to make money on blockbuster movies like this so that they can continue to make other movies. This is good news to me. I have zero interest in this movie but I did go see American Sniper which may not have been made if not for blockbusters....which now American Sniper is one but nobody would have predicted it before the expanded movie theaters a month after it was out.
I hope this movie bombs to hell
“50 Shades of Grey” had a production budget of $40 million. Hardly a “blockbuster movie.” Look at “Jupiter Ascending” for a failed blockbuster. It happens, yet they’re still made b/c some of them are big. I don’t see how the success or failure of “50 Shades” would change that.
The virtuous woman, modest in dress, demeanor and behavior, good wives, good mothers and homemakers ceased to be in demand or respected about fifty years ago. I don’t really know whose fault that is. Being a grandmother, I can’t even begin to fathom the behavior of young women today. Even middle aged women seem to have a completely foreign set of values and morals than those who were young fifty or so years ago. I can only chalk it up to the world being in its death throes and this being the generations that Jesus told us were signs of the end.
I’m not saying that my generation was chaste and beyond reproach when I was young; far from it. But it seems we had the capacity for shame and recognizing the results of wrongdoing that is absent today.
Jupiter Ascending was always going to be a loser in America. It will make it movie overseas. 50 Shades of Grey made for 40 million but will make around 250 million in America will be considered a blockbuster.
Well I am afraid your hopes are going to be dashed.
Maybe, but that kind of staying power will require word-of-mouth. It’s had terrible reviews so far. Can it keep up this kind of success?
Time will only tell on this one. I actually thought it would not have been a success when they picked two obscure actors to play the main roles. I was wrong. So who knows what the conclusion will be.
And this is why the nags need to stop whining about “rape culture” and “patriarchy,” because they are supporting the very thing that they claim to be against.
FR is my Valentine’s Day destination.
At a production cost of $40 million, it has already turned a nice profit.
I will be seeing today's 3:45pm showing. My wife demanded a movie for Valentine's Day and by "movie" she meant "50 Shades" and nothing else. "Sniper" was out of the question.
I fully expect to be bored.
I think you are correct, because we’ve already seen this movie twice: 9.5 Weeks AND The Secretary. Not an original thought out there in Hollyweird.
***9 and 1/2 Weeks***
That is what I was thinking!
LAST TANGO IN PARIS.
I drove by the BROOK theater on Peoria st in Tulsa OK, 42 years go and saw lots of young women going to see that movie.
I never went to it but saw it a few months ago on TCM. Glad I didn’t waste my money at the theater. It was as awful as the reviews of 42 years go said it was!
I believe it was the scene where Brando wanted the girl to run her finger up his butt that did it.
IIRC, Cedric the Entertainer played Ralph Kramden.
