Trojan Horse Pop-Up Notice! Need advice from FReeper geeks! (Vanity)

Posted on 02/16/2015 5:35:32 PM PST by ru4liberty

I don't currently have an antivirus program on my computer due to very tight finances. I've been holding my breath hoping that I wouldn't have an incident before I can afford to download or update an antivirus program.

I used to have Kaspersky, and lately it has been popping up with an alert that I have a Trojan horse. The local computer geek people recommended Kaspersky when they worked on my computer a few years ago, so that's why I was using it. Since then, they have worked on my friend's computer and told her that she didn't really need to pay for a program and that Avast was an excellent free program.

I need some (simply-worded) input as to what I should do. If I download Avast, will it take care of the Trojan horse problem? Are there other free programs that are better?

I am using a Dell desktop computer with Windows 7 Home Premium. My browser is IE 11.

Sorry to be late to the party but ADW is currently my go to clean up tool and I have used it to clean up messes not fixed by every product I've thrown at it including multiple stand alone cleaners.

AdwCleaner

It's free.

Just as an aside - my dad was trying to get to VA.gov and Firefox blocked it and so did Explorer. Kept saying it was untrustworthy and wouldn’t let him bypass the popup. Ideas?

Interesting - I just tried it with Chrome/Firefox/Explorer and all hit it - I also have browser protection against bad sites on all 3.

Usually there is a choice “I know the risks” and you can add an exception. I used to get them a lot, but don’t now, and it was for gov sites. (my son is a vet)

I keep getting this thought in my head that the VA and .gov sites are doing this on purpose to cut down on the work load but we don’t have to go there, right?

Envy of what, some guy being so clueless that when someone posts a thread for help because he can’t afford a 30 dollar program, a goofball suggests he buy a Mac, and then repeats it, and on his third try, still doesn’t get it?

Your posts were hilariously clueless.

Sometimes such a conflict or issue can show up for a short window, but the maker fixes it quickly.

Just about all security software gets a bad update at some point, where they will show a false positive, but it gets fixed quickly.

Malwarebytes and Avast do fine with each other.

Are you a drug user, a troll? Your posts on this thread make zero sense.

I guess it is, you will probably run into it again and it can be puzzling.

I guess it is during one of those incidents that some of us delete a program and try something else for a while.

One time about 9 or 10 years ago, one of my security programs suddenly found many dozens of threats on my clean computer, dozens and dozens, and dozens, and it was a nightmare, but after a few minutes I figured out that it must be a totally messed up update, and just shut it down, a few hours later, or the next day, they had fixed it.

Ask yourself, would someone with a Mac need a $30 band-aid ?

Fascinating, you are still telling the guy who can’t afford $30, but who has just received a thread’s worth of advice on free versions, to buy a Mac.

This is your second day at this, amazing.

It seems that whatever you tried, it knocked you offline.

Yes, I’m offline. Having to use my phone, which is a PITA! Gotta figure out how to save my computer. Then I’ll be back. Thanks for your input.

I concur with most of the posts. Go to C/Net.com and download Malwarebytes, Spybot Search & Destroy, and either AVG or Avast (both are very good, only choose one though as you cannot have more than one Anti-Virus on your PC at a time or it will cause a lot of problems for you, so make sure your Kaspersky is removed also). All of these are free.

Install and update them. (Make sure to Uncheck any “Tea Timer” update in Spybot Search & Destroy anytime you update that program as it often causes conflicts).

1. Make sure you run Malwarebytes first as this will remove any issues from your RAM (in other words, if you don’t run this first, your virus, malware, or virus could reinstall itself after a reboot).

2. Run Spybot Search & Destroy second.

3. Run your Antivirus third (AVG or Avast, whichever you installed).

Always run these when you are having issues (I run all of them once a week myself) in this order and you should always be free of malware, spyware, and virus’s on your PC.

Hope this helps. Good Luck
