LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – It's been more than three decades since his landmark goal became the centerpiece of the U.S. Olympic hockey team's Miracle on Ice. For 60-year-old Mike Eruzione, it still seems like only yesterday.

Eruzione says he's doing something every week that's associated with 1980, the year he scored a game-winning goal against the Soviet Union in the medal round at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics.

It was a bunch of college kids matched up against one of the best teams in hockey history. The United States triumphed with an improbable comeback 35 years ago.

For a rare time, I watched ESPN recently and aired was a documentary on Soviet-era hockey. The video was incredible in that some of it still exists. But replays and highlights of the 1980 USSR-USA game never loses its charm.

30 for 30 did an episode on this game and the Russian hockey team, doing background on the coach that started Russian hockey. The film focused on some of the Russian team members.

As are all of the 30 for 30 films I have seen, it was an excellent film that also touches on the lack of freedom and Communist treatment of the players. I highly recommend it.

What is the title of the film? Also, what other films best depict this moment in sports history?

I can’t remember the name of the film. My oldest son recorded it for us to watch. But it is a part of ESPN. 30 for 30 films, at least all the ones I have watched, are very good, thought-provoking films.

I don’t know enough to tell you which other films cover this part of sports history. Maybe some other knowledgeable FReeper will know, although I did see the movie “Miracle on Ice” several years ago.

It is one of the greatest upsets in sports history because it was essentially college players going on a roll and beating what was essentially a team of NHL-quality players--even more impressive is the fact it was done using international IIHF rules, which American players are not used to.

I think it was called “Of Ice and Men” or something similar. It was very interesting!

We sat the kids down the other day to watch the motion picture about it.

Even though Mama and I obviously know the end of the story, it’s as exciting as it gets.

Remember it like it was yesterday.

Went to an indoor soccer game at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. The PA announcer told the crowd that “the United States has just DEFEATED the Soviet Union...” and the crowd went nuts. Shouts of “USA! USA!”, and pretty much nothing happening on the soccer pitch mattered after that.

Went home to watch the replay and walked in during the 2nd. period. My first reaction was “who in the hell is Boris Myshkin?” Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov had pulled Vladislav Tretiak, one of the greatest goalies to ever play the game, after a substandard first period.

I knew right then why the US had won. If their thick-headed coach had left Tretiak in the game the Soviets likely would have come back and won.

An that game is what turned a Texas teenager on to the sport of hockey...I’ve been a fan of the game ever since. Hard to believe it was 35 years ago.

I remember watching the game in 1980 with my college roommates. Even though we knew the outcome, the last 10 minutes had us climbing the walls. The Soviets threw everything they had, and came up empty. It was great.

And the ESPN 30 in 30 “Of Miracles and Men” was very well done. It showed the Soviet robots as real people. And it showed one of the many evils of the Soviet system; it denied great players like Tretiak and Karlamov the chance to play in the NHL.
