(Full Title) VLC gets first major release across Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Android TV

VideoLAN today launched what is arguably the biggest release of VLC to date: an update for the desktop coordinated with new versions across all major mobile platforms. The world’s most used media player just got massive a cross-platform push.

The company told VentureBeat that the releases are the result of more than a year of volunteer work on the VLC engine and the libVLC library. As a result, VLC has gained numerous new features, has seen more than 1,000 bugs fixed, and has significantly increased its scope of supported formats.

VLC will play BluRay disks on Linux, but it’s tricky and hackish.

I love VLC for what it is but also for how it has shamed so many other bloatware media players, most of which seem more concerned with congratulating the programmers and publishers than in playing media files.

Same on this end. Just checked the repos and they say this version I have is up-to-date. Then again, this latest update just came out only about a day or so ago, so it might take awhile for the the software pros to vet it and get a new and verified package in the mix.

I think I like the fact that the experts want to play with it for a bit to verify its functionality and worthiness before they provide the release to the general public. :)

If it does not, you can always force a previous version from the management program.

Yeh. Not as fond of it as Kaffeine, but it appears to be quite functional for the few times I have employed it so nice to hear that an upgrade to address some issues has been implemented.

VLC Blu-ray support is poor and rarely works for me. Someone over there needs to sort this out. In the meantime, avoid CyberLink like the plague...those guys are rip-off robber barons, and their software stinks of surveillance.
