article seems to imply that they used the wolf/dogs to hunt down the Neanderthals.

Humans paired up with dogs as early as 40,000 BC, it is claimed, giving us such an advantage in hunting that it prompted the wipeout of our Neanderthal rivals. The first premise: Dogs paired up with modern man.
The second premise: (from the article) Dogs chased prey into the kill area of modern man.
The conclusion: The dog-modern man association wiped out Neanderthals.
Missing is the logical step in the argument how this would be true. It's not in the story.
