Dogs bred from wolves helped humans take over from Neanderthal rivals in Europe 40,000 years ago

It's thousands of years since mankind won dominance over nature, and we're still pretty proud.

But a top researcher says we've been giving ourselves too much credit - because we were helped by our oldest friends.

Humans paired up with dogs as early as 40,000 BC, it is claimed, giving us such an advantage in hunting that it prompted the wipeout of our Neanderthal rivals.

The oldest date I have seen before about the domestication of the dog was 30,000 BC. WOOF!

Miniature Dogs bred from Chihuahua`s helped Neanderthals lose control of Europe to wolve-loving rivals in Europe 40,000 years ago.

While dogs were helping prehistoric man find food, what were cats doing that was so important?

I read an interesting article that said the wolf actually domesticated the human. Weak wolves, who couldn’t compete, ‘adopted’ the human and hung out with them, getting food in return for help and companionship.

“I read an interesting article that said the wolf actually domesticated the human.”

Unfortunately, that continues through today. My two dogs, an 85 lb. Pitador and a 110 Lb. Great Dane basically run my life. Indeed, all to many of us FReepers seem to have the same problem with the dogs we “own.” They have a horribly insidious talent for coming to own us.

From the headline, I thought this was about dogs helped Europeans defeat muslims...

Dogs are actually at the top of the food chain. Over the years, they have domesticated people who provide them the best of their homes, bring them food, and take care of their needs.

My dogs sleep on a $2000 mattress, but we are permitted to sleep on a small slice of it.

Yes, I know that this is crazy.

My dogs are “working dogs” from the herding group. They are definitely enjoying the benefits of the hard work of their ancestors.

Yawn. Another unprovable theory from the chattering PhDs.

Only weak minded dog owners only have this problem.

Yes, and this PhD claims homo sapiens wiped out neanderthals. I have neanderthal DNA, as do many, many Americans. How do you “wipe out” (and not absorb) a specie if you are making babies with them? And the proof is right there in our DNA, not some PhD postulations.

Dogs helped us take territory. Cats demand that we keep and maintain it for them. Maybe with some fluffy pillows and yarn lying around.

I pity you. You have a disgraceful, degraded, and degrading family situation similar to mine. The Great Dane owns “my” couch while I have to struggle with the Pitador every night for bed space. Worst of all, I take pictures of this and shamelessly show them to my friends, a practice of which I suspect you are also guilty. Worst of all, when I threaten to sick my dogs on people, they just laugh at me.

IOW, dogs have owners; cats have staff.

I am myself more a cat than dog person but regarding human household cats are a kind of broom parasites these days.

They were probably of some use to counter rodents at the time but today they are mostly fellow travellers.
