CDC Finds Troubling Rise in Teen Suicide Method

More teens who are killing themselves are choosing suffocation and strangling, government researchers reported Thursday. And more young women are committing suicide.

It's a troubling trend and it's not clear what's driving it, the team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

"The data don't allow us to determine why," said the CDC's Thomas Simon, a suicide expert who helped lead the study. "Is it social media? Is it conventional media? Is it access to other methods?"

What CDC is very worried about is giving troubled a teens a "how-to" guide for how to commit suicide, but the agency also wants parents, teachers, friends and others to be aware of the risks. When media report on certain suicide methods, often officials see a rise in suicides afterwards, using the method described.

Probably more troubling for the teens themselves and their parents than for the CDC .... hey, it all counts against Holdren’s goal of a 95% population reduction.

The rise in communicable diseases and diseases thought to have been extinguished in this country should be at least as troubling to the CDC.

I suspect it’s social media nonsense. Makes kids crazy when things don’t go right, and the pack turns on you. Kids are ruthless online. Sure adults know it doesnt matter, but kids take everything too personally.

This is a very poorly written article. It sounds like the CDC is upset with suffocation vs poisoning because “it is more fatal”. What?! Suicides went down in 2007 and now are creeping back up.. and social media is being questioned?

The CDC is worried about the WAY teens are killing themselves? What - not government approved enough?

“Sigh. I remember the good-old days. When all they did was take a bottle of sleeping pills and go to sleep.”

Hmmm. Said in jest - but I wonder if they do chose a more “in your face” method as a means to get back at those they feel have harmed them, slighted by, etc. Nothing would say “I hate you and it’s your fault” better than finding your child hanging from the entry-way chandelier.

So sad. And like your photo reminds us, it is now a government approved means of getting out of difficult situations.

Why is the Center for Disease Control involved in a study like this? Seems outside of their charter/purview and more appropriate for some other agency to examine.

But auto-erotic sex and vampirism have nothing to do with it, BTW.

Progressives love it. More people die, and they get to exert more control. Win win.

“She bullied me on Facebook. My friends in 7th grade aren’t speaking to me. I’m going to kill myself.”

Too many parents are ignorant when it comes to Social Media.

Sung to the tune of an old toy commercial ...

Suffo-caaaa-tion,
Brand new! Suffocation.
Suffo-caaaa-tion, the game we love to play!
First you get a plastic bag,
Then you get a rubber band.
Over your head ...
Then you're dead.
Hu-ray-ay-ay-ay!

Darned but I can't remember the actual toy behind the tune/jingle (which emphatically was NOT a game of suffocation), but I am pretty sure it was a Kenner product. I recall the mangled lyrics from the early to mid 1960's.

Isn’t that really the “KF U”, to hang yourself in the doorway or like a neighbor did a few years back, when being put through hell and all kinds of outrageous assaults on his personage and feelings, by hanging himself from a rafter in the garage?

So the wife came home after work and probably to enhance her plans for the soon to be “Wuzband” and he had a parting gift for her...

“Honey! I got home early...Ave Nice day...witch”

Expect more as the country descends into “physician-assisted suicide”. Teens seek to emulate their elders in matters of sex, smoking and drink, and it’s reasonable to expect them to pick up the culture of death.

Sadly, I think it’s because its fairly quick and someone can’t come rushing in and save you. Drug overdose, stomach pump. Use a gun, no guarantee you will not end up on an operating table. Cutting yourself, very hard to do. But tie a rope and hang yourself, permanently done. I think some of them are auto-erotic, and I don’t know anything about vampirism but I truly believe it’s the quick finality vs. risk of being saved by someone that is driving the methods. Breaks my heart whenever I hear of a suicide, such a terrible waste, and just thinking of the level of desperation is unbelievably sad.
