Time for all Windows users to FREAK out over encryption bug
ComputerWorld ^ | Mar 6, 2015 | Gregg Keizer

Microsoft on Thursday confirmed that Windows was vulnerable to FREAK attacks, and researchers changed their tune, saying Internet Explorer (IE) users were at risk.

The news was a turnabout from earlier in the week, when researchers initially fingered only Apple's iOS and OS X and Google's Android operating systems as those that could fall victim to cybercriminals spying on purportedly secure communications between browsers and website servers.

By adding Windows to the list, the number of jeopardized users jumped dramatically: Windows powered 92% of all personal computers last month.

In a security advisory released Thursday, Microsoft said Windows was, in fact, vulnerable to FREAK (Factoring attack on RSA-EXPORT Keys).

"Microsoft is aware of a security feature bypass vulnerability in Secure Channel (Schannel) that affects all supported releases of Microsoft Windows," Microsoft said in the advisory. "Our investigation has verified that the vulnerability could allow an attacker to force the downgrading of the cipher suites used in an SSL/TLS connection on a Windows client system."

All Norton does is slow your hardware down so much that you can’t tell if anything is wrong.

Wow, are you way behind the times.

And your lie about Norton is just plain STUPID.

What operating system? We never said that Microsoft wasn’t patching. They’re not patching unsupported operating systems which include XP.

That “unsupported” operating system still runs the strong majority of operating hardware!

Not supporting it leaves holes through which the supported systems can be damaged.

Microsoft remains a joke.

I’ve had Norton since 1995 .. never had malware, viruses, or Trojan emails.

Don’t like it .. who cares ..!!!!

Well .. I don’t have XP.

So what is everybody getting upset about.

Quite frankly my dear, I don’t give a RIP what computer hardware or software stuff you use. I like what I have .. and I don’t care if you hate all of it.

So you missed out on the days when Norton software was actually worth installing. Used to be one should always have Norton on your system, then Symantec bought them and the slide began. Sorry but their stuff is crap now. I would recommend uninstalling it, but it doesn’t even do that well anymore, it’ll complete hose your system. Next time you get a chance to use a machine that’s never been Nortoned give a shot, you’ll find it’s faster and more stable.

Don’t go replacing it with McAffee though, they stink too.

Well .. I don’t have issues with Norton .. if you do .. MAYBE IT’S YOU AND NOT THE SOFTWARE.

BUZZ OFF - I’m sick of this attack on the software I choose to use.

You’re the kind of person who does nothing but spew garbage about a product just because YOU don’t like it .. go away.

I don’t know what to believe. I’ve been told that the free antivirus and malware downloads are as effective as any. I bought a new desk top a year ago from a local company that specializes in computer security for the military. When I asked about this issue (but only when I asked) he unreservedly recommended the ESET NOD32 Antivirus. So far, nary a glitch. But others may have a different opinion. I just know it’s the most effective I’ve ever had.

Actually you probably do have problems, but since you’ve been using it for 20 years you don’t know it. I used Norton before Symantec bought them and watched them circle the drain, finally gave up in the late 90s. It was sad to watch what was some of the best software in the world that legitimately should have been on every computer turned into junk in under 10 years.

It’s not an attack, it’s advice. Friends don’t let friends put crappy software on their machines.

It’s not just me that doesn’t like it. There’s thousands of links out there, I gave you a sampling. No reason to get defensive, no reason to have your ego tied up in software.

I’ve been using AVG-Free for a decade without any problems.

Way better than anything I’ve paid for except the old CPAV, which is gone now.

The free stuff tends to be the best, though some of it is junk, can’t even remember who I use anymore, your local shop is usually good info on that. The two things to know for sure are McAfee and Norton are just plain awful, slow unstable, just plain annoying. You’ll notice a lot of software out there, especially games, say to disable your anti-virus during install, that’s because of McAfee and Norton, they get in the way of a lot of stuff and take huge memory footprints. Heck some games even say to disable AV during play, again McAfee and Norton.

Quite frankly .. I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU THINK OF NORTON.

WHILE I STILL HAVE THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE THE SOFTWARE I WANT .. THEN I CONSIDER IT NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS WHAT I BUY OR DON’T BUY.

GET IT ..??????????????????????

GOODBYE!!

But you told us what you use. And we’re informing you there are better options. If you don’t want to discuss it you shouldn’t have brought it up. Yelling is not called for.

It’s not a hate thing, it’s a safety thing. If you don’t keep your system patched properly, you’re putting your personal information at risk. It’s that simple.

Microsoft provided several YEARS of warning. They even extended support well past the original sunset date. Choosing to stay on an unsupported OS is a gamble. Regardless of your OS choice, every provider sunsets support for older operating systems.
