But seriously, the Chinese have been absorbing American technology for decades, and in many cases stealing it. If you’re surprised about what you’re seeing, then you haven’t been looking hard enough.
Entire industries have been uprooted from the US and sold to China at bargain prices.
The very fact that luxury US products made by companies like Apple are doing so well in China has it’s dark side.
China is now in its ascendancy, while the US is in decline.
China’s where the money is now. We’re bankrupt, living on borrowed Chinese money.
Any company like Apple would be stupid not to go for some of that money.
I quit wearing a watch when I figured out I could always ask the guy next to me for the time. Then cell phones made even that outmoded. I won’t ever strap anything on my wrist again.

Yes, it does. Apple refuses to allow government access to their servers. . . and your data is encrypted with 256 bit AES encryption before it ever leaves your device and on your device. Then Apple anonymizes it, splits it into four pieces, combines it with other users, and then AGAIN encrypts to an additional 256 bit AES encryption on their servers. Even if the government were to ask for your data, all they would get is gobble-de-gook. Decrypting that data without your passcode, which is entangled with your devices 256 bit UUID, would require 10207 YEARS before every possible combination of passcodes could be tried to get into your data. I think it would be pretty much of a moot point by then. The Universe will have died from heat death long before that.

I don’t wear a watch most of the time but when I go camping I’m wearing my G-Shock - even though I have my iPhone in my pocket,
I’d never buy a first generation Apple product.
That said, I paid a premium for my iPhone 6plus.
When the Apple Watch 2.0 is introduced, I might look at it, but only the cheap one.
Problem is that high-quality watches are long-term investments. I could see myself buying a Rolex because I could wear it for my lifetime, then give it to my grandchild for his lifetime.
Even the stupid-expensive Apple Watch Edition has a 4-5 year lifespan.

Apple may be good but I’m sure that - being a portable device - a lot of metadata can be gathered.

IIRC, the original iPod was over $300 back when they first released iPods, if anything, I see the cheaper sports one as a more comfortable way to collect athletic data while I run or walk. I wasn’t a fan of the ipod nano configuration while running, and this will get the job done more comfortably as a wrist watch in terms of measuring walking/running/biking speed and distance. Also, expect it to get cheaper with time.
