Why Does Laptop Keep Going Out When I Watch Video?
Personal ^ | 17 MAR 2015 | onedoug

Posted on 03/17/2015 9:08:00 PM PDT by onedoug

My computer shuts down completely upon watching certain video. For example, the earlier posted Tom Cotton speech. When I clicked onto it, I was able to watch essentially the introduction, then, BLANK. The thing just shuts off.

FR, or stuff like my library account, or the weather forecasts, etc, are fine. But the minute I switch to a video format, or try to watch a CD...blank. It suddenly shuts down completely.

Is it my system, or is there a fix that I'm unaware of?

I know there are many knowledgeable herein. Thank you all in advance.

It’s overheating. Either the fan is blocked or the material that keeps it from overheating has worn away over time.

I had that sleep problem one time. Let the laptop go to sleep while I was watching a WWII movie. I went to bed.

I woke up at 2:00 am with Iwo Jima or something at full volume going on in the kitchen (laptop). One of the catz had bumped the mouse. ;)

My laptop was doing the same. I fixed it the same way with two wooden strips. Got a new surface pro now and really like it.

Is that a pad with a fan?

Laptops can get packed with dust and lint. Try vacuuming the vents.

You haven’t responded to anyone, so I guess your laptop caught on fire and you’re dealing with the fire department.

Please disregard my other post about “a pad with a fan”. LOL

This site is for a Toshiba with overheating issues, though the symptoms differ from yours.
http://www.laptoprepair101.com/toshiba-laptop-overheating/

This site is for an HP with similar issues to yours and, at the end of the 2nd page, the guy resolves it by reloading drivers.

Hope you can fix it quickly.

Also this could be a sign that your computer is having major problems. BACKUP EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO SAVE. Seriously, this could be a big, red flashing warning sign. Back it up now!

Has it ever worked? Did it stop recently?

If so you might be able to do a system restore to go back to the settings you had when it worked.

In Windows 7 do the following:
Left click the start button.
Right click "Computer" and select Properties
Click the "System Restore" button and go from there to find a restore point before you started to have problems.

This will undo any programs you've installed since that restore point, but it should undo any drivers or programs that caused the video problem.

Not quite The consensus of posts seem to relate to a heat venting issue.

I’ve used some Office Depot aerosol to clean out the fan compartment and keyboard. It does seem pretty hot down there. I’ll also elevate the thing a bit. If that doesn’t work I’ll try some of the other referred solutions.

Once again, thank you all.

Have you ever cleaned it... if it has a cooling fan just how much dust bunnies are inside that sucker?

If the fan isn’t running at all, you have a serious problem with the fan motor or the thermal relay. If the fan starts running even faster when the video starts, a vacuum can pull out a lot of dust and this helps to cool things down. Also you may want to avoid running too many graphically intense applications at the same time.

If the fan just runs normally, then maybe it is not a thermal problem that is causing a shutdown, but rather a sign that your battery is going bad because the circuit protection is kicking in, which protects the laptop from drawing too much current. This is why I asked about when this happened in relation to your power source.

Do an overall tune up by cleaning up all the junk files and do a disk defrag and check for disk errors too. I had a laptop that was overheating because the hard drive was failing. Once I cloned the old drive to a new drive and installed it, the overheating went away.

Also if your heat sink has separated from the graphics chip, it could cause overheating and a premature failure of the chip. If you can’t solve the overheating problem on your own, you might want to take it to a shop. An overheating laptop has a short lifespan. Sometimes opening it up and reseating the heat sinks and cleaning out the dust will solve the problem entirely.

Mine looked like this after two years. I had to take it apart. If you've done surgery on desktops, with a how-to visual guide, there's little to it. Here is a guide for Toshiba, but they are all similar, I found an old HP to practice on for my first time.

If the flash player simply needed updating, it will say so with an error message. Also, a missing or old flash player won’t cause the entire computer to simply shut down.
