Do you recommend a one-piece or three piece hard top?

Definitely a 3 piece. You can take out the panels with very little effort, making the Jeep almost a convertible. Plus, taking the two panels off makes taking off the hard top less awkward and easier.

"......thought about doing the top,......"

Had the same thoughts but it seems to be raining every day.

Jeeper Freepers,

I installed an interesting after market item today, a shift knob for both the 6 speed and the transfer case shift. The company is Drake (you can find them for sale through many companies). I bought mine through Extreme Terrain.

You can find them on Amazon as well:

Amazon Drake Shift

You can get them for almost all Jeep models (Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade,Liberty, etc), and in both automatic and manual.

They sell them in both billet aluminum and black.

So if your old shifter is ugly, worn, or you just want to change it, this is a neat after market item.

A couple of tips if you install one. The transfer case shift knobs on Jeeps can be tricky to get off. Use a strap wrench if you have on to rotate and move the knob slightly, and that will loosen the plastic a bit and it should pop off. If not, use some muscle and force. You don't want to break it, as you may want to put your old shifter back on.

There is a set screw underneath the tire tread of the manual shifter and for the transfer case shift knob. Take the tread off, and loosen the set screw with an allen wrench. For the automatic, keep the screw that holds the shaft of your original. You won't need the lower bezel - that comes off and you put it aside.

These products are well made - and the knobs seems easier to grip than the factory ones I had on my Jeep (slightly smaller in size as well).

Of course, some of you probably have some "unique" shift knobs as well.....

I got a few small parts in.

Some of my Willys electrical is kind of frail as I found out swapping tail lights and park lights. I will have to string new wire. Headlights are OK as most of the rest.

The weather and the shop being booked solid are going to probably push back some of the bigger things I had on agenda. After those, then finally new tires. I figure no point in buying new ones until I see how the lift thing actually looks.

I don’t have a top for mine and it’s supposed to rain all next week.

True. But that is a great website to peruse for things.

Good idea. What size tires are you thinking about?

A salute to shift knobs that have clearly readable markings on them like these.

From what I have read of the kit that is supposedly going in (2 ins), my max height is maybe a 32”.

I will be glad to get to that point. Before Christmas, I scored some NOS Cragar Jeep steel wheels that are sitting in the basement taking up what little room I have.

The latest parts arrivals are a new turn signal switch, a pair of electrical wiper motors, and a dimmer switch. It has vacuum wipers that don’t work.

I am going to have to run wire for park lights, turn signals, and brake lights. At least there isn’t much under a Willys and straight-wiring shouldn’t be to arduous.

Wow, thanks. There’s a post recently about the custom-made halo or lights for the Jeep cup holder. That was interesting too.

I’ve learned a pricey lesson regarding aftermarket taillights that are supposed to be an exact working copy. Externally they are.

The LED ones I bought from the parts people who specialize have three wires. One is a ground, one is for park and the other is for turn signal or brake. Can’t have both. It can’t differentiate either. They will go on Ebay since they are opened. Someone will probably get a bargain.

My wiring in the rear is frail and a rework anyway so I am stringing fresh wire.

I am going with later model 76 or above ones to get functionality. Too many stupid people in my area who don’t pay attention to anything plus local cop shop a few blocks away and I don’t want any hassles.

I’ve stripped the dead vacuum wiper motors and saw how much modification will be needed to make the electrical replacements work. The shaft is about 2.5 inches long and shimming out would look stupid.

Cutting is no problem but the end is a square for the wiper arm to clamp down on. I will go see a machinist friend downstairs at the shop tomorrow to see what he can do.

Eventually a lot of stuff will come back off when major paint and body happen which might be next year at the rate things are going.

Anyway the Willys is dead again. For whatever reason yesterday it isn’t sucking fuel. The carb and fuel pump are new and less than a year old. Dump some gas down the 1 barrel it will run and stumble a bit.

issue is the TPMS sensor on the wheels. Other than that, it’s perfect.

You have a couple options on that one. Factory TPMS is usually junk and up to 200 bucks for a new one so you can get universals at NAPA or Oreily for about 80 - 90 and change them out when you get new tires

or you can remove them altogether and put a bit of black tape over the light.
you'll have to check your tires with a $3 pressure Gage but it works.

BTW I have often thought of opening a shop that would de-electronic vehicles so you wouldn't have to park them in a Faraday box should the gubment boys want to shut down the highways.

Thanks man. I saw the generics specifically for Jeep at pep Boys for 25 bux but when you said universal, it’s for all types of vehicles?

That’s a good idea for the shop. You could be a mobile mechanic too.

All types, you just need to make sure your shop has the right scanner to "train" the sensor but if they do a bunch of TPMS's they probably do.

Some vehicles will even reset themselves after about 20min. I'd stay away from the rubber stemmed ones though, they can dry rot just like any other VS

Hang in there, wiring can be frustrating. I have known many people who gave up trying to fix previous wiring and ended up just pulling the whole harness and starting over.

I have a bad carb on an MGB right now. I give up - thinking of taking it to an expert.

LOL - me too. But the "Inspectors" would never have it.

I knew a guy who was a really good wrench. He had a split window Corvette that he completely restored himself. Beautiful.

He had a late 90's Chevy beater sedan that he replaced the entire engine, but used a slightly different engine, and the car's computer would throw a code that could never, ever, never be cleared.

So he would take it to a particular station every year to pass inspection, and the people there knew him, and all was good.

Then the state eliminated all state employees and used contractors, so they closed that particular station.

The new inspectors told him he had to junk the car - no ifs, ands, or buts. They refused to issue him an inspection. So he broke it up for parts.
