Is Ted Cruz Allowed To Run Since He Was Born In Canada?
npr ^ | 3-23-2015 | DOMENICO MONTANARO

Posted on 03/23/2015 10:36:02 AM PDT by Citizen Zed

There will be a question from some about Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's eligibility to run for president.

That's because even though Cruz grew up in Texas, he was born in Canada. (He renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2013.)

Democrats are sure to remind voters of Cruz's Canadian birth since some on the right have questioned where President Obama was born. The president is a native of Hawaii.

The U.S. Constitution says presidential candidates have to be "natural-born citizens." But the Supreme Court has never weighed in with a definition, leaving it open to interpretation.

It's a question that has come up before. In 2008, senators passed a resolution, making it clear, for example, that John McCain was allowed to run given that he was born on a U.S. military base in the Panama Canal Zone. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, both senators then, voted for it.

Barry Goldwater, the 1964 GOP nominee, was born in Arizona when it was a territory – not a state. And some questioned George Romney's eligibility to run in 1968, because he was born in Mexico. Romney's parents were U.S. residents.

Cruz's parents worked in the oil industry in Calgary, Canada, when he was born. His mother was born in the United States. His father was born in Cuba, but later became a U.S. resident. Cruz argues that because his mother was born in Delaware, he is, in fact, a "natural-born citizen."

No apologies necessary. No need to delete.

This is not the first - nor will it be the last thread (Cruz Birther thread?) posted here.

Allow me to offer a Liberal-to-Common Sense translation:

Questions about Obama’s origins were just racist, now it is a series question. Because NPR is asking it.

Say, is the media trying to vet a presidential candidate again? Thought that was a lost art since they never did that with Obama?

garyb :" so, now, NPR is worried about the definition of natural born citizen? figures."

Exactly true !
NPR is one step ahead of CNN in credibilty, and three steps ahead of MSNBC
It all comes out of the 'White Hut', because they, the media, are vetting Cruz more than they did the current occupant.
and look what we have here, a _res__entwith no id, and who in his own book forward, states he was born in Kenya and was given scholarship as a foreign student.
Talk about hypocrisy !

“Cruz argues that because his mother was born in Delaware, he is, in fact, a “natural-born citizen.””

He argues that because it is true. That’s the law, he’s a natural born citizen just like Romney and McCain.

With Obama, apparently there used to be some law that you had to reside in the US continuously for some period of time after you turned 17 for your children born in a foreign country to be US citizens and his mother didn’t meet that requirement. T o me the whole birther thing seemed like the GOP wishing we hadn’t just elected a communist and the DNC letting them erect a straw man that they could wack down.

One big difference between Cruz and Obama is that Cruz has presented himself, throughout his adult life, as being an American. Obama presented himself in various materials as being Indonesian/Kenyan and it seems most people who knew of him thought he was Indonesian/Kenyan. Then he wants to be president and suddenly he’s claiming to be an American and a Christian.

“so, now, NPR is worried about the definition of natural born citizen? figures.”
The utter hypocrisy here just kills me...mortifies me,....I’m voting for Cruz, and if these stinking rat bastards keep him from running, I’ll write in a vote for him.

How about letting NPR know that. It seems they’re a little behind the curve in regard to the Constitution.

Remember where the Obamanistas' so called "proof" that Obama was born in Hawaii ended?
"Hawaii governor claims record of Obama's birth 'exists' but can't produce the vital document" - dailymail.com - 1/20/2011 Excerpt:
"{Hawaii Governor and decades long Obama family friend Neil Abercrombie} told Honolulu's Star-Advertiser: 'It actually exists in the archives, written down,' he said. But it became apparent that what had been discovered was an unspecified listing or notation of Obama's birth that someone had made in the state archives {State Archive Building}."

His chances would be better if he was born in Kenya and claimed to be from Hawaii.....Oh wait.....That would never work.....Nevermind

As I’ve said before, Democrats will not have to bring up the issue of Cruz’s eligibility. There are enough Republicans who will do that for them.

Interesting, because here’s what the 1790 Act said.

““And the children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens.”

While that’s just a law, it was passed almost immediately after the Constitution, and probably with numerous of the Founders in Congress at the time.
