“Prepare yourself you know it’s a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He’s gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky”

The car, a Subaru Outback, turned into the path of the motorcycle; it was unclear at press time how fast the motorcycle, a 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600, was traveling.

Jesus Freaks from the hippies.

“Prepare yourself you know it’s a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He’s gonna recommend you to the spirit in the sky

Recommend you to the spirit in the sky
That’s where you’re gonna go when you die
When you die and they lay you to rest
Gonna go to the place that’s the best

I’ve been a sinner you know I’ve sinned
But I’ve got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He’s gonna set me up with the spirit in the sky”

I recently heard a cover of Spirit in the Sky and the performers changed the “never been a sinner/never sinned” lyrics to something more theologically accurate.

Prayers up for Norman.

His song is on my all time favorites.

May God be with all those involved in the accident.

Actually, Greenbaum is Jewish. He wrote the song as an imitation of Christian spirituals, I think just as a lark, and it turned out to be the only successful song he ever had.

(Some might take that as a sign)

The driver of the motorcycle, 20-year-old Ihab Usama Halaweh, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the CHP statement. A passenger on the motorcycle, Nhmia Mekonnen Kahsay, 20, was also brought to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in critical condition, the statement said. …
Sorry to say, but names like that still make the red flags go up for me. Especially what with Greenbaum being Jewish (in spite of the references to Jesus in the lyrics of SITS).

Hard to believe a Subaru can turn in front of a motorcycle? Kinda like guns that kill people.
Stupid people who call themselves reporters trying to write stories.
I guess the printers using letters to write stories is more like it! lol

Actually it’s “Never been a sinner, I never sinned.”

The reason I don’t listen to his song. Fruit of the devil.

I didn’t say that Greenbaum was a Christian, but the song was a part of the Jesus Freak period.

Jesus Freaks were a great thing of what emerged from the time.

Songfacts describes it this way: “Norman Greenbaum was kind enough to tell us about this song. He set out to write a religious rock song, and he is Jewish. Instead of using a Jewish word for God, he used “Jesus” because he thought it would be more marketable. It took months for Greenbaum to finish the music, but the lyrics came really quickly. Interesting fact we also learned about Norman: he used to run a goat farm.
The original inspiration for this was a song about a preacher by Country singer Porter Waggoner. Greenbaum was also influenced by folk revival music and traditional southern blues.”
