When Mary Kay Letourneau Fualaau was forced to go public in 1997 with an affair she was having with her former sixth grade student, Vili Fualaau, after she became pregnant with his child, it was the teacher-student sex scandal heard around the world.

At the time, Mary was a 34-year-old, married teacher in Seattle, who already had four children of her own. Vili was just 13 years old. Mary was arrested and served seven and a half years in prison.

Today, Mary is 53 and Vili is 31. The couple is still together and are about to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. The two daughters they have together are now teenagers -- older than Vili was when the affair started.

Mary and Vili sat down for an exclusive interview with Barbara Walters to talk about how they managed to stay together all these years, despite their very public and forbidden relationship.

“If it wasn't strong enough in the beginning, it wouldn't have carried through those years,” Mary told Walters.

Considering the outcome, I tend to doubt she ever intended to “seduce” him.

Unless you led a VERY sheltered life it’s reasonable to believe you - at one time or another - have found yourself attracted to someone who could have gotten you into a whole lot of trouble. You probably chose to step away from temptation before it became to strong. But if you’re a normal person, you probably remember that bit of temptation and ask yourself, “What if?”

This couple doesn’t have to wonder, do they? I had no dog in their fight so I really don’t have an opinion as to whether or not they did the right thing. I just hope they’re as happy in twenty or thirty years as they appear to be now.

Yeah, but still, with all due respect, the guy was 13 at the time. Don’t you think that there may have still been something a bit sleazy at that?

I not only have no idea whether or not it may have been sleazy but I really don’t care! They lived through all that and came out reasonably happy. That sounds like a winning situation to me. Untold numbers of people can hide behind their keyboards, voice their opinions and feel smugly ‘holier than they.’ I’m not going to play that game. I’m a great believer in the “walk a mile in my shoes” philosophy.

My grandmother had her first child at 16. She graduated HS at 15 and married my grandfather, who was about 2-3 yrs older. That was normal back then.

This was a 12 year old boy asking his teacher to have an affair with him because he was in love with her. AND SHE DID IT. She says she “loved” him.

Sorry, all youth are worthy of love - they are innocent and true and should be cared about by their teachers and coaches: but if you truly care about the young one, protect him from needy, selfish child abusers -— including yourself!!!!!

Real love would have meant telling him she would transfer him out of her class, and even the school, if he could not speak appropriately to her. Declarations of love were inappropriate and he was to stop Immediately; there would be plenty of time later in his life for romance with someone his age. BUT NO: SHE PLAYED STRIP TEST WITH HIM, if he got an answer correct, she removed an article of clothing. She abused him.

I’m sorry they let her out of jail ever.

Old fart, you think it is ok for people in positions of authority over children to have sex with them???? Sheesh. No. Just no.

We don’t rape 12 year olds. Who are you, Woody Allen??

Is that Baba Wawa?

Yep. Girlfriend of the late Senator Ed Brooke (according to her).

Me? I’m just glad Mary Kay and Vili are happy. I hope they don’t run into too many overly judgmental people like I see posting here.

I just hope their kids turn out to be successful.

Well, so far, so good. My oldest is 57 and the youngest is 26. There’s a flock of grandchildren out there and more than a few “greats,” at least one of whom is old enough to have her own kids. But thanks for the good wishes! You have a good life too.

Yeah, but-and I admit it’s just my opinion-I personally would have been more comfortable if Mary Kay waited until Vili turned 18 or so. 13 is a bit young, IMO. But that’s just me.

I’ve been gone for a few days so this is my first opportunity to answer, but (and I don’t mean to denigrate your opinion) our comfort with their decision is really of no importance to anyone but us. They’ve made their decision and - at least, so far - it appears to be one they’re comfortable with. THAT’S the important part.
