Word For The Day, April 24, 2015 -SCHLEMIEL

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

SCHLEMIEL

hear it pronounced

Noun

an awkward and unlucky person for whom things never turn out right.

Origin: 1890-95; < Yiddish shlemil < Hebrew shəlumīʾēl Shelumiel, a Biblical and Talmudic figure, one of the Judges. Specific historical references are unclear. In contemporary Hebrew, to do something in Shelumielesque fashion means so inept as to be destined hopelessly to fail.

I’ve seen the reruns a few times since I’ve been an adult-and I can’t imagine any reason why I liked the show other than that I was a kid-to my grown-up self it was just silly and even obnoxious at times.

Some Gandhi facts for y’all:

1. He walked around barefoot, so the soles of his feet were very tough.
2. He was emotionally sensitive.
3. He was clairvoyant.
4. He was said to be cursed with bad breath.

Altogether, I guess you could call him a super-callused fragile mystic hexed with halitosis.

That has got to be one of the best-the next best one I ever saw was a take-off on an animal behaviorist for a zoo and ocean habitat park bringing sea birds through the big cat habitat while the cats were resting for some porpoises to eat so they would mate-he was transporting gulls across staid lions for immoral porpoises...

Good one!
To be fair, it was my daughter who posted it. That also explains the tagline alteration.

Everyone at church is rooting hard for the Caps to win it all. Since we’re done, and our captain can take his time healing from his mystery injury.

I’ve never been able to master the skills to do that type of play on words-that one was one of the winners in a contest that Texas Monthly liberal rag had years ago...
