Bicyclist Says Driver Tried to Run Him Down Multiple Times in San Francisco
NBC Bay Area ^ | 5/9 | Christie Smith and Vince Cestone

A bicyclist said he was just riding on the road in San Francisco when a driver tried to run him down--and more than once.

Now, he wants the person behind the wheel to face justice.

The bicyclist said it was a scary ordeal for him. He said a driver tried to knock him off his bike and seemed to keep coming for him Thursday night.

According to the cyclist Anthony Ryan, a witness apparently was able to shoot some video. Ryan said he was on Phelan just North of Ocean Avenue making a left turn when a car came up behind and hit the horn. He said the driver pulled up and tried to open the door in order to knock him off the bike.

Ryan said he tried to get away by crossing the street, but the driver followed. He believes he intended to ram him. He said he tried to get a picture of the license plate, but the driver took off toward San Francisco City College.

And when he stopped at a light, things escalated even more.

"He actually put his car in reverse and tried to run into me again, and I kind of dodged him, but at that point he was behind me," Ryan said. "And I was basically riding for my life with this person behind me looking for cover between some parked cars, so I basically intentionally crashed my bike between two parked cars and leaped off my bike."

Ryan said the driver tried to side swipe him and took off. He said a number of people stopped to see if he was OK. He was leaving San Francisco State where he teaches a class. City College police responded, saying a report was filed. The car is a white two-door Honda, police said.

Ryan said he suffered bruises and scrapes.

I am sure there’s more to this story than what the cyclist says.

Given the town, and how cyclists are there.

Ditto. Reads like the second part of a two-part story.

Maybe the motorist was one of the countless who where harassed during the “Critical Mass” protests some years ago - and an e. e. cummings fan...

I think the driver needs to have his license pulled, I mean if he can’t take out a cyclist after multiple tries, he just doesn’t belong behind the wheel anymore! ; ) it’s sarcasm but it’s true, it’s trucasm.

I’m guessing the ‘after I flipped him the bird’ part was conveniently left out of the narrative.

The cyclist probably provoked him so it’s ok.

I looked at the video. It is dark and murky. Some data might be gained by going through it carefully, frame by frame, but it is only at the end of the event, in any case.

There is no justification for a car attempting to run down a cyclist that has not committed a crime.

Some car drives just do not like cyclists.

Driving a car is not a license to murder or commit assault.

I’ve seen enough videos, from bicyclists, who were just riding and had to deal with overtly aggressive drivers who either were trying to knock them off their bikes or drove in a manner where accident could happen.

It doesn’t surprise me.

It is ironic that liberals who go to any length to impose their ideas for personal safety on the public, from what size soda a person can drink to how many air bags your car must have, still promote the world’s most dangerous form of transportation, the bicycle.

He’s lucky it wasn’t an SUV. SUVs are known to have a mind of their own (according to most news articles).

Many drivers seemingly have split personalities: civil and polite when on foot and discourteous, impatient, and subject to road rage when behind the wheel.

A bicycle, in and of itself or used by a competent user is not dangerous. It’s idiot drivers who fly into a murderous rage over the simple sight of one who are.

Not hardly. Bicycles are roughly, in this ccountry, 7x more dangerous per mile traveled than a car.

Motorcycles are 20x to 30x more dangerous than a car. (Statistics vary.)

Some people just don’t understand.

Cyclists are doing their part to save the planet from Global Warming, so we should reward them by allowing them to violate each and every traffic law with impunity.
