“Janis Joplin wouldn’t be caught dead at any award show these days in some of the “attire” worn by “stars”.”

Because Janis Joplin was too busy drinking booze and sleeping around to actually get sober, glam up, and walk a red carpet.

Even on her better days:

“I have to get undressed after the show, my clothes are ruined, my heels are run through, my underwear is ripped, my body’s stained from my clothes, my hair’s stringy, I got a headache and I got to go home and I’m lonely, and my clothes are all fucked up, my shoes have come apart, and I’m pleading with my road manager to please give me a ride home, please, please just so I can take these fuckin’ clothes off, and that ain’t no star, man, that’s just a person.” http://www.janisjoplin.net/news/26/48/Janis-In-Retrospect/

As Melissa Ethridge said about Janis Joplin at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:

“Yes, Janis Joplin was a junkie, yes, she was an alcoholic, yes, she was promiscuous - men, women, she made no excuse for it. In 1967, Janis Joplin was strange and freakish, but I think today she would be pretty hip.” https://rockhall.com/inductees/janis-joplin/transcript/melissa-etheridge-on-janis/#sthash.2fHVsSDU.dpuf

Janis Joplin didn’t have to gyrate and stick her tongue out onstage either. She just relied on her singing talent combined with heart and soul.
She was a real talent but a mess in her private life. Can you even sing along to a Miley Cyrus tune?

I never cared much for Janis Joplin - she was way too frantic. My idea of sexy was The Ronettes.

They didn't show their bodies much, they didn't screech and jump around and draw their faces into contortions and get all sweaty, they just stood there, wiggled around just a little bit - as Jerry Lee would say - and were every teenage boy's fantasy. They had a poise and self-control that was very feminine and sexy.

Dusty Springfield was another like that.
