Went to a newly-opened, airplane hangar-sized Cabella's today. Very impressive store. I haven't bought ammo in a while and the prices were a shock. Makarov 9X18 is $1/round and in short supply. 7.62X39 also $1/round. Tokorev 7.62X25 was about $1.20/round. 7.62X51 was about $1.30/round. 7.62X54, more. .22 was 10 cents/round if you bought a brick. The least expensive self-defense ammo, surprisingly, was 9X19/Lugar, at about 35 cents/round. Cowboy Colt .45 was $1.60/round.
At these prices, the ammo in your gun safe is worth more than some of your firearms.
I am of the opinion that somewhere someone is intentionally driving up the cost of ammunition. I dont know where to lay the blame but I am responding by reloading. But even that is getting expensive.
Cabelas is not cheap at all. Those fancy stores w aquaria & stuff have to be paid for somehow!
And hard to find supplies.
Bet you didn’t see a whole lot of .22WMR either. At a decent price that is.
First thing. Don’t go to Cabela’s for ammo. Their prices are two to three dollars higher than WalMart. Last time at Walmart I bought 3/330rd boxes of Federal .22lr for $18 a box, they only allowed three per person. At a recent gun show 22lr’s were going for $35/320rds and $65 for 500rds. OTOH at least they’re out there if you want to pay the price. Local box store here was selling some kind of Remington super-duper target round .22lr for $23/50rds.
I’ve found good prices here:

Last night I picked up some ammo:
50 rds x .38 spl @ $23
2 x 50 rds x.380 @ $34
200 rds x .22 @ $18
It really adds up fast.
I am on enough different ammo suppliers' lists that I have lately been deluged with e-mails on ammo, some of which is priced lower than I've seen it in a long time. Now, this is stuff like .223/5.56 and 9x19, mind you, but it's one sign of improvement.
In the last month or so, I have finally started getting on-line offers of .22LR, mostly match-grade or at least good-quality practice stuff. It ain't cheap, but it's there in quantity. (In the meantime, I switched over to the air gun for much of what I used to use a rimfire for so my .22LR needs are the lowest they've been in many decades.)

“Dont go to Cabelas for ammo.”
Not always true.
I went 2 months ago after getting an email flyer from them for a 1400 round bucket of bullets, Golden Bullets Remington at $65.00 a bucket plus tax.
Under 5 cents a bullet 1 per customer (I made it a family outing and ended up with 4 buckets)
I still run across bulk 22,s at (Walmart) a little over 5 cents a round a couple times a month and just bought several boxes of CCI 22 magnums at $13.98 for 50 plus tax.
I have been in ammo mode for the last 4 years and so far it has paid off.
I have a ton of food for all my guns plus reloading supplies,
I occasionally enjoy window shopping at Cabellas but I never buy ammo there.

At this price it’s better to pump 4 9mms into an attacker than one .45. I think with 4 hits he’s got more volume escaping from the four holes than the one.
Just bought 400 rounds of PMC Bronze 230 gr FMJ .45 ACP. Set us back about $165, or a bit over .41 per round. That was at the local Cabelas, too.

This stuff is great for Sporting Clays, so I pick up 5-10 flats when there is free shipping.
My state’s liberals have outlawed ammo purchase through the mail.
