Ammo price report (personal experience)
5/30/15

Posted on 05/30/2015 11:56:26 AM PDT by pabianice

Went to a newly-opened, airplane hangar-sized Cabella's today. Very impressive store. I haven't bought ammo in a while and the prices were a shock. Makarov 9X18 is $1/round and in short supply. 7.62X39 also $1/round. Tokorev 7.62X25 was about $1.20/round. 7.62X51 was about $1.30/round. 7.62X54, more. .22 was 10 cents/round if you bought a brick. The least expensive self-defense ammo, surprisingly, was 9X19/Lugar, at about 35 cents/round. Cowboy Colt .45 was $1.60/round.

At these prices, the ammo in your gun safe is worth more than some of your firearms.

Ouch. New Mexico has it’s failings, but firearms isn’t one of them.

https://www.wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=668 You pay shipping but they are fast and reliable and not expensive. Living a few miles away, I don't pay shipping, so it beats the best prices I see that include shipping.

Get a Beamon two caliber, .22 and .17, with interchangeable barrels. Walmart sells them for around $100 and they are accurate and fast, break barrel guns.

Get it sent to a friend in a nearby state.

“At this price it’s better to pump 4 9mms into an attacker than one .45.”

At these prices, I need to take a class in knife fighting for self-defense...

Or maybe throw a half dozen rounds of ammo down the street when mugged, so the thug will be too busy running after the ammo to pay attention to me & my wallet.

Ask them for a price breakdown, wait till you see the tax.

Nice, will check em out.

Anyone here shoot any of the Double tap “Equalizer” ammo that has two bullets in one cartridge (a hollow-point and a 95gr FMJ)? Saw it on Gun Talk. The ones for a 40 cal are 190 gr. which might be a handful in my compact Ruger.

I have stuck with the .177, but that's mostly because I am familiar with the pros and cons of that bore size, while my .22 use has never been extensive. The .22 is probably a better meat-getting choice if you plan on using it for rabbit, squirrel and such.

I like the Weihrauch (HW) "springers" because they are dead simple and I don't have to fool with tanks or capsules. If I had a bunch of discretionary cash, I'd get a pre-charged pneumatic air gun, as they are much easier to shoot well (springers are unforgiving if not held exactly the same each shot, and the more powerful they are, the harder they are to shoot), and they can deliver power levels that get a shooter into rimfire territory.

A good, well-made beginner gun would be a .177 Weihrauch HW30S (the "S" version is equipped with the better HW trigger), but it is a relatively low-power proposition. Back when Robert Beeman was importing HW guns with some special features, the HW30S was imported as the Beeman R7. An early Beeman R7 was hands down this family's favorite air gun, but it was traded away for a powder burner. The Beeman brand changed hands and I eventually bought an HW30S "Deluxe" to replace it.

Thinking of getting a good air rifle, can’t decide 22 or 17. What’s your recommend?

The question is what is your intended target? If it's nuisance birds such as sparrows or starlings then I would recommend a .177.

If you talking about rabbits and other large varmints then your choice should be .22.........

Now, when you're talking about air rifles, you have two choices, "break barrels" or "PCP's"..........

Quality PCP's are horrendously expensive and you have to make them your hobby if you intend to shoot with them.

With that being said, "break barrels" are probably what you're looking for but if you want a quality rifle that will hit your target consistently with a quality scope then don't buy anything that is made in China.

The best quality break barrels are made in Europe............

I have a Beeman Kodiak, .22, that I purchased over 10 years ago and it's no longer available. I can shoot head shots on rabbits out to 45 yards consistently and drop them.

Several years ago I purchased a Stoeger Suppressed air rifle in .177 and went thru two Leapers UTG scopes and and a final Bushnell scope only to realize that I could not acquire a consistent grouping at a mere 45 ft. due to the inconsistency of the break barrel locking. At 45 ft. I had a variance of 4 inches high and low. Not surprising, this Stoeger is made in China........

There's lots of air rifle videos out there on Youtube, and the ones I always enjoy watching are by "Ted's Holdover".......

It costs a buck to build a good .308 round.

But it is a far superior round than what you can buy at that price.

Just curious, what do you have? I've been trying to save money for a Daystate but being retired and on a fixed income, it's almost impossible.

I've got a couple of rifles I want to sell to finance the PCP, one being a customized Belgium Mauser but I can't find any reliable source to find out what it's worth.........

With that being said, there's lots of great PCP's out there and I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.....
