Need advice on things to do in Los Angeles with my kids.

I am planning to fly into LAX this August with my daughter (7) and son (9) while Mom stays home with the other two. We are mainly going to spend an afternoon with my dad on the Iowa at his Navy reunion, but will have a day, day-and-a-half to do other things.

I would definitely like to go to a beach as the kids have never seen the ocean. Some other attraction or park would be nice too.

I've never been to the L.A. area before and am not entirely sure what to expect. Could use some advice! Thanks.

I think you’re right. I’d like to take the kids to a big attraction but want them to soak up as much of a “California experience” as I can provide in such a short time.

Take em to the pier in Santa Monica.
There is a park above the pier that looks out beautifully over the whole area.
It is safe and lots to do and see.
At that age they will remember it always.
Either that or Disney.
What ever you decide, make a memory and have fun.

Universal Studios, Disneyland, Knotts, Magic Mountain, the Santa Barbara pier, or go a bit south down to Legoland, the San Diego Zoo, or Seaworld.

None of these days will be particularly cheap, but some are not prohibitively expensive, and all these places are lots of fun.

Train ride either up the coast and or down the coast to better beaches, and a lovely ride.

Yes. My children like it... It’s just simple, Coney-Islandey silly California fun.

If you want an education in how “medical” marijuana is working in CA, may I suggest visiting Melrose Avenue or Venice Beach. There you will smell pot all over the place and observe “patients” entering and leaving the “clinics” for their “medicine”.

Very California is Hollywood where the stars are in the sidewalk. Unfortunately, the freaks have taken over and it’s not really a good family destination.

If you do get down toward San Diego, the USS Midway is there and available to tour.

That, you will not regret. As far as attractions, look up the Science Museum and go see a Space Shuttle.

Errrrr! ...don't remind me about that Space Shuttle that should be in front of the NASA's Johnson Space Center, Mission Control!

I recommend a stroll through Hollywood Forever Cemetery. You can visit the graves of many of Hollywood's greats - Douglas Fairbanks, Fay Wray, Mel Blanc, Charlie Chaplin, Estelle Getty and tons more.

LA is a city similar to a 3rd world city.

Go south to Orange county....Disneyland/Knott’s Berry Farm.

Laguna Beach is a must! Clear, warm waters! A lot of Art Galleries....

That’s a good recommendation. Lot of a history there.

On Mel Blanc’s tombstone it says “That’s all folks”

Rudy Valentino’s mausoleum always has a fresh rose on it. He still has his admirers.

Paramount Studios is right behind it.

Drive East a few hours into Las Vegas, NV or Lake Havasu, AZ and spend your money in free state. DONT FEED THE LIBERAL BEAST!

In n Out IS the best burger in town! Double-double is the GREAT! Eat your fries first....They go from tater to fries in a couple of minuets! Don’t forget the grilled onions on your burgers!

Carl’s caters to adolescent teen age boys with it’s gripping ketchup on a busty model’s white dress commercials........One reason I’ve boycotted them for the past 25 years!

Good list, I would add the La Brea tarpits / museum. Unique area especially if the kids are interested in dinosaurs. It is in Los Angeles.
