The recall involves all five colours of the Beats Pill XL Speaker system Apple is urging owners of one of its Beats loud speaker systems to stop using the kit because it poses a fire risk.

The firm says owners of the Beats Pill XL should return the product because its battery can overheat.

More than 230,000 units have been sold in North America alone since they went on sale last year - the recall is worldwide.

At least one person has been injured by a defective unit.

"Apple has received eight reports of incidents of the speakers overheating, including one with a burn to a consumer's finger and one with damage to a consumer's desk," reported the US Consumer Product Safety Commission in a statement.

Beats' website now lists the speaker system as being "out of stock" The firm is offering to send a box to customers to return the product if they complete a web form.

Apple sold the speakers for £269.95 ($429 US — Swordmaker) from its own site.

It is offering Apple Store credit or an electronic payment of £215 ($341US — Swordmaker) in compensation to anyone who returns the item.

However, it will reimburse customers the full price they paid if they provide a receipt or other proof of purchase.

Apple paid $3bn (£2bn) to buy Beats Electronics, the speaker's manufacturer, and Beats Music, its subscription streaming music service, a year ago.

Speaker fire risk? Really?

I had a system fail because of bad capacitors (That I was able to replace) but a FIRE RISK?

Apple superiority, yo. No system can start fires like Apple. Even the speakers.

Wait...Beats is an apple product?

No wonder they’re so over priced. They are the new Bose.

Mine are Creative Cambridge Soundworks S750. They had the bad Chinese CapXon capacitors. My Samsung monitor had these caps, even.

A simple replacement and good as new.

Apple is urging owners of one of its Beats loud speaker systems to stop using the kit because it poses a fire risk.

Can't understand why. They were designed by a doctor.

...I paid $40 extra for a BestBuy 2-year extended warranty for it. However, I paid far less than the going price of $299. BB had it on sale for $269, but I found it online at a Walmart for just $220, so they matched that price and I bought it there. Unfortunately, they, nor any other BB in New York City, had it in stock, so they had to order it from a BB just outside of NYC and had it delivered to me at the house. I waited all friggin day for it to come. When it finally did, it was a different item completely! A Samsung laptop! So I called and told them, and they said to bring it to the store. I did (wasn’t easy getting there!) and they gave me the correct item (the Beats XL Pill), plus an additional $40 off for the trouble. And now THIS crap happens.

I don’t give a rat’s butt about that idiot Dr Dre. I can’t stand Rap and Hip Hop. I seriously doubt he had anything whatsoever with the speaker design anyway. He probably just put up the money.

Just went to the Beats website. Nothing at all there about this. And if there is something, it must be pretty well buried.

Didn't he sell off the brand, laughing all the way to the bank, apparently.

OTOH, lots of products, designs, and brands are destroyed by the cost reduction MBAs.

The Apple website, however, has this...

Beats Pill XL Speaker Recall Program

Apple has determined that, in rare cases, the battery in the Beats Pill XL Speaker may overheat and pose a fire safety risk. This product has been sold worldwide since January 2014 by Beats, Apple, and other retailers.

Customer safety is always a top priority at both Apple and Beats, and we have voluntarily decided to recall this product. If you have a Beats Pill XL Speaker, please stop using it and follow the process below to send it to Apple. In exchange, we will provide you with an Apple Store credit or electronic payment in the amount of $325 USD or approximate equivalent in local currency.

This program only applies to the Beats Pill XL speaker which is shown below. The Beats Pill XL Speaker comes in 5 colors: black, white, pink, metallic sky and titanium which are also shown on this web page.
___________________________________

Return Process

Here’s how the process works:

Please submit your return request by completing this web form.

We will send you a postage paid box so you can return your Pill XL speaker to us.

After we receive it, your Apple Store credit or electronic payment will be available within approximately 3 weeks.

Additional Information:
Product returns will only be processed via the web for this program. Please do not attempt to return your product to any location that sells or supports Apple or Beats products.

If you need assistance with the return process, please contact Apple Support.

This program does not affect your statutory or warranty rights to receive a refund.

Looks like I might actually come out of this with a nice little profit! They’re paying $325 to anyone who sends one back to them. I paid just $180, plus tax and $40 for the BestBuy extended warranty, which BB should be giving back to me.
