Man Dumps Chocolate Chips on Lawn to Deter Dogs
NBC San Diego ^ | 6/3 | Dave Summers and Monica Garske

Posted on 06/03/2015 10:10:28 AM PDT by nickcarraway

John Robinson, of North Park, said he’s tired of neighborhood pets leaving waste in his yard and is hoping the candy will prevent dog owners from walking pets near his property

A man in San Diego’s North Park community has dumped chocolate chips in his yard in an effort to deter dogs, but the act is upsetting neighbors. Frustrated with neighborhood dogs leaving waste on his lawn and dog owners not picking up after their pets, a man known as "John" recently scattered several pounds of chocolate chips in the grass in front of his home on Lincoln Avenue and in a nearby easement. Suspects Sought in Attempted ATM Theft John said it was an experiment – and that it worked. Over the last several days pet owners have been steering clear of his property, with some neighbors afraid the candy will make their animals sick. Some concerned residents have called San Diego County Animal Control and the San Diego Police Department to complain, saying this is threatening the lives of their pets. Unbelievable Animals: Python Swallows BBQ Tongs[NATL] Unbelievable Animal Stories Sarah Fisher is one of those worried residents, and she’s warning others in North Park not to walk near John’s home. “[Residents] are scared of what he might do,” Fisher told NBC 7. “If he is doing this – which is like an animal genocide – pretty much, he's putting it out for animals to ingest and get sick.”

Through social media and a neighborhood phone app, Fisher has been alerting local pet owners of the chocolate chips left in John's yard. Fisher has a two-year-old golden doodle named Lucy that she walks with regularly. She is now avoiding John’s property but fears unsuspecting animals will stumble upon the candy and get sick.

John agreed to an interview Tuesday with NBC 7, if his face wasn’t shown on camera. He said irresponsible dog owners are constantly not picking up after their pets and leaving piles of waste in his yard.

He said he has left signs in front of his home – including a note written on a yoga mat that suggests an animal could be electrocuted if it urinates on his tires.

However, those signs don’t seem to work, John said, so he came up with the chocolate chips idea.

“They can walk on the other side of the street,” he said. “I am tired of it. People disrespect my yard; I'm tired of the stuff.

John insists chocolate won't harm the animals. Still, there is a large school of thought that says it can be toxic to dogs and can lead to illness and even death, depending on what kind of chocolate it is and how much a dog ingests.

John said he plans to mow the grass in the next few days to get rid of the remaining chocolate morsels. However, his neighbors want something done about the situation immediately.

San Diego County Animal Control Deputy Director Dan DeSousa said animal services investigators were notified of this incident by North Park residents on Monday.

He said the investigation is ongoing, and no further details would be released at this time. On Wednesday John said someone had broken the mirror on his car in what he believes is retaliation against him putting the chocolate chips in his yard.

So IYO he should pay for a fence(1000’s +) to keep inconsiderate A-hole dog owners from allowing their animals to crap on his lawn?

Well looks like you don’t live by your mantra because dog crap on a lawn does a lot of harm.

I don’t think the guy is a nut for mot liking poop on his lawn.

Plenty of people don’t want poop on their lawn.

I do, however, think it is unwise to push a person like this who is simmering with anger about something. People do bad things when they are angry, so best to leave him alone and respect his wishes unless you want to deal with the consequences of his anger.

As a dog walker, i would avoid his lawn knowing his preferences, and if my dog did poop his lawn, I’d clean it up.

He needs to get a camera and film the neighbors leaving their dogs to crap on his yard. Then take it to the police and press charges.

By the way. My dog would have been dead many times if chocolate killed dogs. One Christmas there was a bunch of chocolate under the tree wrapped up. The dog smelled the chocolate, shredded the box, and ate a couple pounds of chocolate.

But I agree that people should clean up after their dogs and not let them run loose. But putting out something that could sicken or kill a dog isn’t cool.

Exactly. The guy has issues and if it wasn't dogs it would be something else.

My digs have a fenced half acre but one of my long time neighbors is warning me about a new neighbor who doesn't like dogs. Seems that their dog was blinded in one eye in their own fenced yard and it looked like it was done with a barbed point just like the one on the frog spear the new neighbor carries all the time as a walking stick.

“poop from an unhealthy dog”

Poop from any thing, dog, human, cat has bacteria and maybe all types of worms and parasites in it.The reason munis and towns don’t want dogs in parks.
Dogs are animals they lick there butt holes and sexual organs to clean them...yumie...mmmm thats sound inviting.Thats filty and any one that allows a dog to lick there mouth or face isn’t to smart.
Ask a vet or GP

Give me a break. My dog has been schitting in my yard for 5 years. About once a month, my 6 year old steps in some. About once a year, I step in some. True, it is my dog and my yard, but it really isn’t a big deal. Walkers should pick up or have their dogs schit in their own yard, but this guy is still a nut with serious anger issues making a mountain out of a molehill out of it.

Some dog owners may not even know about the issue of chocolate.

Which is why dumb sh1ts shouldn't own dogs. I love dogs, I have some big grandogs who shed a lot staying with us regularly. But in my opinion at the very least 50% of dog owners are clearly inconsiderate of their neighbors. And about 75% don't know dick about the animals and their requirements, emotional and physical. An understanding of canine nutrition? ha ha ha

I had one neighbor who bought a poodle for her 6 yo daughter (and yeah, the 6 yo was supposed to take care of it) and she was completely surprised when I told her that the reason the dog was chewing up her house was because it needed more than 10 minutes a day in the back yard...on a leash. When told she needed to walk the dog at least 1/2 mile a day, she said, I don't have time for that. I replied, then find it another home. Which eventually happened.

I’ve sprinkled poop with red pepper flakes, but this being Texas I think even dogs like their food spicy! ;^)

Obviously that means “other” people, not my neighbors.
HOA rules, like other laws, are meant for those who will obey them. If there is no enforcement, the rules are pointless.
